Things that take you out of a movie

Overused sound effects, especially the woman or girl screaming, the baby sound, and the Wilhhelm scream. That first is the worst when it's supppsed to be a serious scene. It's such a distinct scream.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

A bad music soundtrack can really spoil my enjoyment. Also all the screaming, whether it's women or babies. Too many jump scares in the dark. I want to watch a movie, not a black screen.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

I like the old school jump scares. They're overused now. I prefer something more like this to a jump scare. Unless this is considered a jump scare.

David Lynch does the best 'jump scares'! That clip is a great example.

Funny that I don't even remember that scene

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

I don't think that film had any sexy scenes with men. Just lesbians.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

There isn't really that much when it comes to what would take me out of a Movie.

I do know that the Worst Movie that I myself ever saw at the Movie Theater was "LAKE PLACID". I went into it expecting to see a "GIANT Man-Eating Killer Crocodile" type of Horror Movie and for the first 30 minutes of the Movie, that is exactly what I got, but then it suddenly turned into a "Save The Crocodile" type of Movie and it was like that for the last 90 minutes of it and it definitely took me out of it and just ruined the whole entire thing for me. That was 2 hours of my precious life GONE FOREVER! :(

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Poor English dubbing for a foreign movie. I always find this very annoying and distracting. I prefer to watch foreign movies in their original languages with English subtitles instead.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

I love it for old martial arts movies for the cheese, but not serious films. Maybe animation if the dubs are good. Even though subs distract, I almost always go for those.

I really hate that dubbing was done on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Perfect film but with that one eyesore.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Those all come from a set of sound fx CD library called The Hollywood Edge. Used to work with it a lot so I noticed how lazy most big productions are to use it. The SAME dopller effect of a car hooting… and yes that female scream snd baby crying.

It pissed me off at one point because there are plenty foley artists looking for work (and using overused sound fx for productions that have money is just lazy), but I guess they reckon nobody notices that kind of thing so they cut that corner wherever they can.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

I figured it was all from the same library. I'd rather low budget effects. At least there's a charm to it. The only time it's okay is when it's played for laughs. Even then, it can be bad.

The more generic ones might go unnoticed, but some of these are so distinct. Like that baby spund has that wah, then a pause, and then wahhhahhh. I've never heard a real baby cry like that lol.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

The female scream and car horn are the most distinctive for me. I've heard them everywhere from Law and Order episodes to big Hollywood movies.

It's a huge library so those aren't even the only screams, cars and baby noises.

It's the foley version of hearing the same pop songs over and over. 😂

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

See, I didn't know that. Knowing that there are other options makes it more infuriating.

ᴳᵒ ᶠᵘᶜᵏ ʸᵒᵘʳˢᵉˡᶠ

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Yep. Infuriating that they don't think anyone notices. Even more infuriating if they did think anyone would notice.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

foley artists have reused the same “children laughing” and “steel gate opening” sounds for the last 50 years lol some real lazy shit

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Bad accents can sometimes do it.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Maybe I mentioned this, but bad Louisiana accents always get mez especially if they're filmed here. Like, you can hear the locals. No excuses. New Orleans ones are the main offenders. Thwy think most NOLA residents sound like other southerners, Cajuns, or they have what I call the old timey plantation owner voice. In reality, the accents sound similar to east coast accents like New York. Like this:

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

Wilhelm scream is fun in a non-serious movie. If it's in a movie I'm meant to be taking seriously, or that's meant to hold emotional weight, then it takes me right out of it. It doesn't take long to record a pained yell.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

At this point, even when used comedically, it doesn't always work. I feel like there was a scene where it did eork because of the randomness, but can't remember what it was.

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

In a good way: really good acting. Lol

It sounds like a bad thing but there are some movie scenes where I get the thought, "Wow, he's acting his ass off here." Takes me out of it for a split second in a good way….

Re: Things that take you out of a movie

I agree, but I don't consider what I think you're talking about good acting. Or maybe I'd consider it a more performative type of acting.

Sometimes I prefer bad acting, like in some horror films, I think the flatness feels more realistic I guess. Like Heather Langenkamp as Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street isn't very good, but she comes off down to earth and relatable. There's this moment when she sees the bars, and says "gross" that just feels so teenage girl. I grew up with girls who would react the same way.

Here's an example of a scene that does this for me:
