I just finished reading a book about WordPerfect a few days ago and while I don't think it was released as 1.0 for Amiga and it wasn't released until 1987, the year after Stranger Things 4 is set, the company that created WordPerfect was based in Orem, Utah and stuffed with Mormons, so maybe the dad had friends in the company who got him a beta release.
