Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

There is so much music in film today, too often wall to wall, that it is easy to snooze through most of them when they show up on the soundtrack, whether they are familiar or original to the movie.

While most of the soundtrack washed over you, barely noted, what song actually made you sit up and say: that is the perfect accompaniment to a scene or the end of the movie?

The Warriors (1979)

This is what we fought to get back to? Swan says as he realizes that they have come home to nothing but a great ugly urban jungle from which there is little chance to escape.

Joe Walsh's unexpected, blistering rendition of In the City exploding on the soundtrack as the gang is walking away down the beach nearly made my hair stand on end.

And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

The songs used in Urban Cowboy are so great for that movie that I am thinking of getting the soundtrack and I hate country music!

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I just watched that movie and was very disappointed. John Travolta's character is impossible to like. Debra Winger was pretty good and that was it. The plot was all about who could ride the mechanical bull. Sheesh.

Actually, John Travolta's dancing was very good. He's a very physical actor. So, that's two things I like about it.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I don't care to own the movie, just the music.

Even though a lot of it does center around mechanical bull riding, which I believe this movie popularized, there was also the side plot of Bud and Sissy and Bud getting used to life away from home such as working at the refinery.

Funny thing is that I ended up getting Lone Star beer in bottles today!

Iron Butterfly's 'In A Gadda Da Vida' at the end of Manhunter is pretty cool.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Absolutely. I love that movie. IMO, it runs circles around SOTL.

He wrote some amazing music!

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Yeah, he was pretty great. I'd say he had great taste in women, too. Dionne was his muse and Angie was his wife. Both classy, likable ladies.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Talk about a song that hooks you in from the very first moment. The OP may have been talking about a pop song that was borrowed for the movie. But this song curdles my blood. For me, this even tops the classic JAWS theme. This song could make a believer out of the most hardcore atheist. "Tubular Bells" is pretty cool, but it can't touch this, as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I watch this movie, I have to fast forward through the opening credits only to be greeted with the chilling line. "The child is dead. He breathed once and then he breathed no more. The child is dead." Brrrr….

Ave Satani

Talk about a song that hooks you in from the very first moment. Blood-curdling. For me, this even tops the classic JAWS theme.

I was manager of a movie theatre when The Omen was released. It was a grand old opera house/movie palace built in 1922 with a full stage and Grand Curtain (remember those?) that I closed at the end of each show.

The second feature ended around 11 each evening. I would stand in the darkness of that huge stage behind the screen listening to Ave Satani, after which I had to make my way through the empty auditorium to close up for the night. I've never forgotten the spooks that ran up my spine during the run of that movie.

And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

1922? It wasn't The Music Box in Chicago by any chance? TMB opened in 1922. And very grand, indeed.

That's a great story, though. I don't know if I would have made it.

This may be TMI, but I was at a gay bath house once and I was walking down the hallway and the guy at front desk piped "Ave Satani" throughout the whole place while guys were going at it. It was unexpected, to say the least. Now that I think about it, there can be something dark and foreboding about anonymous sex. And why would somebody play that kind of song when people are being intimate? It's all about energy and intention. Brrrr…

Thanks for sharing!

No. East Coast. I held it together for a couple of years, but those great old theatres were dying left and right. I finally turned it over to new management and he eventually closed it. The building was abandoned and torn down around 20 years ago.

That Ave Satani episode is worthy of Mel Brooks! I can just imagine the look on everyone's faces.

And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I was slightly spooked. My first and I think quite accurate thought was "who listens to this kind of music during sex?" But that place had some unfriendly spirits. Bath houses can be setups for plain bad energy.

I like your Mel Brooks' example very much. It takes the teeth out of the fear and makes everything light and funny. Nice.

This was used in the x-rated cartoon "Heavy Traffic". I love this movie. I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen. Just wild.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

This is an obvious one, but it's so good. John Travolta is electrifying on the dance floor. He moves with such grace.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Totally!

I love John Travolta. He's an incredibly physical actor and knows how to move his body.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Oh, yes, he absolutely knows how to move his body! He is mesmerizing to watch. He was good in "Grease" as well.

I also think he can be naturally funny. I always forget that he started out on "Welcome Back Kotter". He was also funny as goon face Billy Nolan in "Carrie".

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I love his body. He's got great rhythm!

It starts with the feet. Everything starts with the feet.

He did this on the Actor's Studio once, and someone came up from the audience who was a fan just for the chance to do this dance with Travolta. He's got great hips, too.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

In the "You Should Be Dancing" scene, he moves every single part of his body. And I love the roll thing he does with his hands. And, yes, he moves his hips expertly! Even when he's just walking down the street, you can't take your eyes off him. He's always been a very transparent actor in the most wonderful way.

I don't know why some people don't like him. I have always been a fan.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I have been a long-time fan of his as well. I think some people don't care for him because of his association with Scientology, but that's just a guess.

I personally have never seen him in a movie where I didn't like his performance. Oh,….except for Battlefield Earth.

I have the movie Swordfish, and I really loved it, even though it got panned.

He's charismatic.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

Yes, he's very charismatic.

I don't know much about Scientology, but I think that Karen Black belonged, so I figure it can't be all that bad.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

I actually had a little boy crush on him in the 1975 MTV movie "Boy in the Plastic Bubble". He was very touching in that film. I remember how he kissed Glynnis O' Coner through the plastic sheet and I wanted it to be me.

Re: Songs In Films That Really Got Your Attention

He is fun to watch when he dances in SNF and for me that is the best part and my favorite thing of the movie.
And watching him work in the hardware store.

I really don't care for the drama bits in between which I think of as lame filler and the movie is more so about the music and dancing.

His dancing is the best part about the movie. He is intoxicating on the dance floor.
