Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I'm a comedy fanatic. I think laughter is the 2nd best (no, sex is not #1) feeling ever, especially the kind that tickles your brain, too. Wit. Truth…. So I evaluate a many stand-up comedians, either by recommendation, random, word-of-mouth, etc.. Constantly. Oddly enough, when I went to the Melbourne Comedy Festival in Australia, the head-liner who sounded funny from the description was actually not funny, maybe a bit drunk. I saw him leaving the men's room, and as I went to wash my hands, he said, "I came here from Canada to use the bathrooms". The night they had "amateur" night, the funniest guy was 18-years old when a few of us from the hostel went again to see 10 Comics for 10 bucks.

And as a sub-question, are everyday men just much funnier than women? I never read Hitchens' essay, but I know he wrote something like this. I posted this question a few years ago on a comedy board, and the responses were just bitch-like. However, I found that it's a very easy way to filter out conformist people who are boring, still not individuals, and have no opinion of their own.

The last private (he wasn't trying to impress a group of people) conversation I had with Paul Krassner was him basically throwing the big female names out there I think just to avoid the lazy criticism of an older man, so by naming young females, he can try to appear open-minded, which appeared to me as empty-minded, despite his great work in the magazine, "The Realist" (which are all archived).. Years before that, I poked him about his odd fascination of Lenny Bruce, who he did know, but when I pushed for him to mention something funny, he'd post a few things. I remember asking him, "Didn't you already know this by the time you were 16?" and he replied with something like, "Yeah, but while you and I might understand, it's the OTHERS" and I think to myself how that kind of elitism is why things are so shitty now. How can some look down on the audience when they've never been given a chance? It's easy to do the lowest-common denominator shit, but I think an artist can bring an audience up just like they can bring them down. People understand a variety of any great work of art. Great art doesn't leave anyone cold. And, performers have time to cultivate an audience, and have them reaching and wanting more.

I had this same conversation with Gameboy, and after he constantly mentioned Lenny, he couldn't really explain why he kept throwing his name out other than using the word influence. It would be like the same people who had no idea who Tesla was, while constantly mentioning Thomas Edison.. Hell, Lenny said he was influenced by Mort Sahl, but I'm not even going to use that as an argument (despite the validity) and instead evaluate the work of comedy on face value. I explained this in-depth to such a length on FB, I basically was told it was too long to read and would rather avoid posting threads. If you're gonna say something, you might as well go all the way, but message boards in general tend to shy away from real conversation because of some "online reputation" or the idea of "I'm supposed to say _______" or "People will/won't like if I say _________".

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

Because comedy is brutal to women. And men are insecure in that field.

You actually need to go into the history of women in comedy and see what they are faced with. It's not that they are less funny; it's that the medium is skewed against them. True.

I strongly suggest you actually do some research and reading about it, and you will find that comedy, particularly standup, is very skewed against women.

Stand up comedy, in particular, is described as a masculine art form. The words that are used to describe success are often violent, such as killed or annihilated. The performer must take charge of the stage, claiming it as their own via the phallic symbol of the microphone. The structure of joke is often centered on an attack on another party. The aggression that such an art form necessitates is encouraged in males but discouraged in females.

In countries that historically view women as inferior to men, comedy is seen as a masculine discipline. The common perception that women aren't funny pervades all aspects of comedy, including stand-up, television, and movies. The comedy establishment, influenced by patriarchal society, has relegated women to the "side of tears and loss." Systematic sexism can be found at the level of audience members, bookers, agents, and male comics. As a powerful social tool, comedy brings women outside of the traditional role that has been defined as theirs.

Women have experience everything from heckling audience members calling them gendered terms like bitches or sluts, to being invited to fake comedic festivals (so the organizer could have sex with the female comedian), to being introduced in roasts as the girl that "slept with one of the judges."

Yeah, you completely flaked when I tried to discuss this on another board.. I'll just throw you on ignore, because you got cornered, and cried your way out of the conversation.

Actually he's a very intelligent poster. I think he just didn't want to rehash the discussion from the other board.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I love both Griffin and Cho. Saw both of them live in NYC a bunch of years back (separate times). Great shows!

I had a friend who loved Margaret Cho. I never really checked her stuff out.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

Wow. That was some introduction! Thank you for that, Cheeky.

The name-pronunciation stuff was very funny. And I burst out laughing with Mother's comment "Oh, I think it would be better if you just died!" As typical of most stand-up comedians, Cho is pretty fearless.

I was pretty shocked when she described her public hair!

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

She slays me! And you're very welcome!

I know! I love it when she imitates her mother

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I think Kathy Griffith is pretty funny and I thought Joan Rivers was hilarious. Phyllis Diller could be very funny.

The stand-up form is pretty aggressive. But in general, I find women to be funnier than men.

Funny women

Bea Arthur
Betty White
Rue McLanahan
Lucille Ball
Vivian Vance
Pat Ast
Nancy Parsons
Sylvia Miles
Carol Burnett
Cloris Leachman (how can anybody not find CL funny?)
Bette Midler

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

Joan Rivers was ground-breaking, and to this day, I still adore her. A very funny irreverent comedian!

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

Yeah, Joan Rivers was an original. Very, very funny person. And despite her sometimes brutal wit, I found her likable.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

So, MSF, are you going to fill us in on your number one feeling?

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I get the feeling that feeling is going to be the feeling like he is better than everyone else.

MSF comes across to me as this pretentious, stuck up snob whose shit does not stink just because he is a fan of Mort Sahl and you are not.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I never got the feeling that MSF was stuck-up. He's always been okay to me.

Though, I have to say that I do not find his namesake funny or interesting in the least. I watched him a few months back on an old Dick Cavett rerun. Sahl tried to go up against the slightly reptilian film critic John Simon and did not serve himself well at all. Sahl was determined to be the smartest one and his strategy backfired.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

he's not so much stuck up as he is delusional.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

I prefer to admire Dick Gregory because not only was he clever and funny but he put his life literally on the line fighting for civil rights and did more than just stand up with political jokes
Plus he was vegetarian or vegan and for animal rights. Two huge pluses for me when it comes to celebs.
He walked the talk and put his money where his mouth was.
Dunno if the same can be said of MS.

Re: Why Aren't There Any Funny Female Stand-Up Comedians?

Because the best comedy pushes boundaries and most women get offended too easily. The ones that don't can be funny.
