History : Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I think the coffee print ad is real or more likely than the Vas. one.

Though in the TV one it does not seem as sexist or more of a soft cell.

I wonder what happened to Chase & Sanborn? I have never heard of them.

Could you please answer my earlier question of what you think of these ads from your perspective as a woman?

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I think all the spanking ads are sexist, as is the implication that a wife should always prepare her husband's coffee. Obviously those ads are from a different time, and people were probably used to ads making it seem like a given that women did all the cooking, laundry, coffeemaking, etc.

I guess I can see how it could be interpreted as just a silly ad, but since that coffee company was also trying to scare women into thinking that their husbands would leave them for women who cared more about their coffee needs, the company probably didn't mean the spanking ad in a silly way. They were trying to threaten and scare women into buying their stankass coffee.

I've never heard of Chase & Sanborn either. This is what it says on Wikipedia:

Chase & Sanborn Coffee is an American brand of coffee created by the coffee roasting and tea and coffee importing company of the same name, established in 1862 in Boston, Massachusetts by Caleb Chase (1831-1908) and James Solomon Sanborn (1835-1903). It claims to be the first coffee company to pack and ship roasted coffee in sealed tins.

When Standard Brands was formed in 1929, it acquired Chase & Sanborn, where it remained until 1981 when the company merged into Nabisco. Nabisco sold Chase & Sanborn to Florida importer General Coffee Co. owned by Colombian Alberto Duque in 1982. Duque's creditors sold the business to Hills Bros. which bought the company in 1984; Nestle became the new parent in 1985. Nestle sold its US coffee business to Sara Lee in 1999, and the Chase & Sanborn, Hills Bros., MJB, and Chock Full O' Nuts brands were sold to Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group in 2006.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

So I take it that you will not want to marry me so that I can put this into practice with you?
Darn!

I can just feel your eye roll from there!
(Actually, I think this could also be a joke. Note where to send for it at the bottom.)

On a serious note, thank you. I can appreciate your sentiments which I share.

Yeah, I respect women to where I am the one who ends up making coffee, meals, sandwiches, and breakfast in bed for them!

Wow.
Crazy at the history of that coffee company and how they ended up getting bought and sold here and there to this and that!

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

One of the results when I looked up the spanking ads mentioned that booklet, because the writer was trying to find out if it was real. It looks pretty obvious that it's fake, though.

Yeah, it's funny how many times that company was sold.

There's nothing wrong with people cooking and doing other household tasks for each other (and/or women or men dressing up as maids for roleplaying), but the old ads were sexist, because they made it seem like, "You're the wife, this is your role now and for the rest of your life." I guess the assumption was, "The man is going out to work, so the woman will be doing everything at home." But even in later years when there were more working wives/mothers, a lot of the ads still assumed the women did everything at home.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I think this could be where that pic was taken from and then used as the possible bogus ad.

That looks more legit though the sentiment is still wrong!

Even back then they were using sex to sell.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Yeah, it's probably from that magazine, which is (like you said) no better than the fake ad.

The guy in the second ad looks like Mel from The Dick Van Dyke show. I just looked it up and found a couple results from people saying it's really him, but I'm not sure if they're joking or not.

Edit: I was right, it's Mel! I just noticed the text on the bottom that says "Richard Deacon," which was his real name.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Yeah, I noticed Richard Deacon as well.
Funny thing is that he was gay!
No joke. He really was.
So he obviously has no interest in that woman.
Just acting like it.

I'm not sure if I knew he was gay or not. I wonder which Hollywood studs he got together with.

I checked in the place where I found out he was gay and found a story of him hanging out with Paul Lynde. Who knows if they did more than just toss back a few in a gay bar.

I also found this that I find of interest since he is doing an ad that features a microwave:
His last job was as a host of a Canadian cooking show, featuring microwave cooking. He also wrote a book on the subject. Who knew?

Here are a bunch of ads with a man spanking a woman (the ketchup ad you posted is there too):

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Many of the over-the-counter remedy ads you see in old newspapers (particularly from the late 1800's) are pretty alarming, or amusing, when looked at today. Here are just a few examples:

Ad for using Laudanum (a tincture of opium) for babies:

Ad for Asthma cigarettes - "Not recommended for children under 6"… but if they're 7 or older, sure, light 'em up?:

Ad for toothache drops (liquid cocaine):

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Love them!!!

For the laudanum, what are "excessive excretions"? Boy, Sears and Roebuck sold EVERYthing, didn't they?

Re: Cocaine Toothache Drops, I want to 'see other side'.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

For the laudanum, what are "excessive excretions"?
Hopefully they are referring to mucous, like say runny noses or hawking coughs. Opium is reputed to be great as an expectorant.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

This site says the Asthma Cigarettes ad is fake, although asthma cigarettes were real:

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I saw an old photo from, IIRC, the early 1920s, which showed cyclists on the Tour de France stopped by the side of the road taking a smoke break. There was the firm belief among some riders back then that inhaling cigarette smoke opened up the lungs and helped them breathe better.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

It's crazy, but then again, look at the crazy stuff people believe now.

This says that at least one of the asthma cigarette brands contained an ingredient that might've actually helped people breathe better:

One item that caught my attention was Page’s Inhalers. When I first saw them, I thought they were just cigarettes; however, upon closer inspection, I was confounded. They were medicated cigarettes meant for “the temporary relief of paroxysms of asthma…hay fever, and simple nasal irritations.”

While we no longer see several of the ingredients in active practice, they were rather prevalent in past pharmaceuticals. Those ingredients include stramonium leaves, tea leaves, chestnut leaves, gum benzoin, and kola nuts. The active ingredient in Page’s Inhalers that could most likely lead to some respiratory relief is the stramonium leaves. A product that has been around for centuries in traditional medicine, stramonium exhibits anticholinergic pharmacological qualities, which would explain the benefits in the limited relief of asthma exacerbations.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I'm not sure about the benefits of any of those additives once they were burned or otherwise incinerated in the process of smoking a cigarette. But who knows, maybe they actually worked.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

I don't know either. It's crazy that they got away with so much quackery. They could sell anything, people would buy it, and I assume nobody was punished when people got sick or died.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Yes… things got so out of hand that lawmakers felt compelled to step in, which ultimately led to things like the FDA and our myriad drug laws and restrictions.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

It's good that people can't just sell any random thing as medication anymore, but the FDA still approves too many medications that shouldn't be approved; nothing with "suicidal thoughts" as a possible side effect should be approved, especially when it's a medication for foot fungus or something. "My foot fungus is gone, but now I want to kill myself." That makes sense.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

LOL
Good one!

They should make and sell a drug called “Zide EFX” that will give you nothing but bad side effects to make you forget the original problem.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Yeah, but people would rather consume veterinary horse paste for parasites (cuz yeah, that sure sounds logical and not like anything we'd see in those vintage "snake oil" ads, riiiight?) instead of getting a jab.

And speaking of cigarette ads, they had doctors, or models dressed up as doctors, pushing Camel cigs. saying they were "Doctor recommended!"

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Funny how the pack looks so real compared to the cartoon.

And with him using a lighter I'm surprised they didn't have him use a fire breathing dragon at the way they use other animals for tasks.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Oh, good catch. I didn't see that.

Maybe it's an archaic expression for "canker sore" - based on the notion that eating sour things, like lemons, can lead to canker sores? Just a guess, though.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Apparently that ad is fake, so someone screwed up when Photoshopping.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Thanks, I'll have to check that out later. I remember watching clips from a 1950s World's Fair, where there were so many space-related things. The voiceover said they projected that the world would be like that in 1987, and then he said something like, "1987…that's a long way away."

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

If there's anyone around in 100 years, I guess they'll be saying much the same stuff that we're saying. People don't change very much over the centuries, it's mainly their environment that makes them seem so different. Socrates was BC, and he was horrified at the unruly youth of his time. What's the saying - The more things change, the more they stay the same? Something like that.

Re: Thread for history buffs - screenshots from old newspapers

Thanks!

I know! I was thinking about that when I was looking at the Victorian Christmas cards posted here too.

I guess I would have a different mindset if I lived back then; I would be used to things a certain way and wouldn't have the modern luxuries, so I wouldn't know any better. But if I ever wind up in a time machine and end up far back in the past with no way back, I'll be purchasing various quack medicines to put me out of my misery. Or I could just say, "This is what will happen in the future," so they'll accuse me of being a witch and kill me.
