Re: Movies about mental illness

Amazing! You gave us almost a perfect impersonation of Aunt Violet. Your entire post is like what Aunt Violet character would say about Kate Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. I'm impressed.

Sorry I couldn't help but notice. Did you want me too? Is that why you wrote that way?

Re: Movies about mental illness

Gosh, I'm not sure. This is how I always write. I enjoy writing very much. Though, sometimes, I must keep the florid in check.

But to give your post some more thought, it was Tennessee Williams who wrote the play in question, so if you are telling me that I am doing some kind of "perfect impersonation" of Tennessee's vision, his insight into human nature and his facility with language, then I would take that as a serious compliment, for sure.

Thanks

blowsy slattern

I had to look this up to see what it meant. Only a genius could give us something so original…

I need to see Virginia again, to make a compare to X, Y & Zee which I watched recently and enjoyed.

For me, Sandy Dennis is the best thing in WAOVW? Richard Burton was also very good, but I'm partial to Sandy.

Re: Movies about mental illness

I forgot about Hemingway. I enjoyed the novel required reading. I don't remember the book's title anymore. I never read anything else from Hemingway. My English instructors were obvious by in love with the man. A lot of time was spent studying and analyzing Hemingway and Shakespeare.

Sorry I can't be anymore specific.

No I did not. I didn't tell you a damn thing. Your account is new. Fuck off creep. How did you even find film boards? Your evil spirit used a hack to get inside the Internet like in that horror movie The Lawnmower Man?

Shine
Directed by Scott Hicks

Geoffrey Rush's breakthrough performance in Shine earned him an Academy Award for best actor that following year. Lynn Redgrave also received critical acclaim. Geoffrey is actually playing the piano in those scenes.

It's a beautiful touching movie that I adore tbh.

Re: Movies about mental illness

Awww, geewiz! You beat me to it! REPULSION! I love that movie. And the ambiguity is handled so well and you never really know why Carol is so terrified of men. The fact that she is played by a young, unearthly beautiful Catherine Deneuve would only magnifies Carol's issue in that most men would want to ravage her. Even if only in their minds. And maybe Carol could read their thoughts or see it in their eyes.

Another Polanski masterpiece with paranoia as one of its themes.

The final shot of the family photograph is provocative, but the ambiguity is still there.

Allright, geewizzz, since you beat me to my pick, I am going to pick another very good Polanski film with similar themes as the 1965 film.

Well-done!

"Repulsion" - ****
"The Tenant" - ***1/2

Re: Movies about mental illness

And I really need to see "Images". It's early 70s and one of my all time favorite directors. I have tried the first few minutes, but the wind chimes ad York's writing about unicorns…

I just need to watch it. I know I will like it as I do all of Altman's 70s movies.

Re: Movies about mental illness

It might be much to take in on first viewing…lol…but I love it, it's definitely an Altman film as only he could make it.

That said, I know it's a film that others can't get into or they absolutely hate it.

It's so odd, it's appealing…Susannah York is great in it. My fave of her's.

I've seen it multiple times.

It's haunting…York's character is totally schizo and out of control.
She is haunted by some guy and then by her own self, who she sees as a separate person that keeps following her and tries to kill.

It's hypnotic.

Altman was very influenced by Bergman's Persona

3 Women was also much inspired by that film, which is about personality disorder - 1 woman who interacts with herself in 3 different stages in her life…done with dry humor.

Both @I Love Hutch and I are head over heels with 3 Women.

Its definitely in my top 10 films of all time.

Re: Movies about mental illness

There is some German movie from the early 80s I saw about a young woman with schizophrenia. It was inspired by an actual person the director met or received a letter from. I can't remember the name of it but it was interesting.

Julien Donkey-Boy is another movie about mental illness.

Re: Movies about mental illness

If you could find the title, please. I like foreign films, but don't know which countries, actors and directors make the best ones.

Re: Movies about mental illness

Stroszek is the title. It's a great movie.

But the best movies are the ones from the '60s especially from Italy and France.

You have all day long. You have no job and no responsibilities. You're lazy even for a black.

Re: Movies about mental illness

My ancestors worked for free as slaves building the USA. Also, there's a pandemic. Everyone's hours were cut or job furloughed. Economic stimulus are still being issued.

Keep up with current FACTS you ugly ass Paki.

You don't even know your ancestors.

I don't know what that has to do with your lazy ashy ass

Re: Movies about mental illness

Roman Polanski's "The Tenant" (1976) Great, creepy film about descent into madness and Polanski is very likable and sympathetic in the lead role.

Re: Movies about mental illness

I didn't know Roman Polanski was an actor and director.

Re: Movies about mental illness

I don't think Polanski acted in a whole lot of movies, but he was extremely good in the lead role here.

Yeah I didn't think so either cuz I gave it some thought. So yeah that sounds about right!

So is his character the woman screaming in his apartment bothering his neighbors?

Re: Movies about mental illness

Oh, you've seen the movie?

Without giving anything away, yeah, I think that you are correct here.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Movies about mental illness

No, I haven't. That trailer kind of gave it away along with you adding the movie to the thread topic. I saw in the movie trailer that he has women lingerie in his dresser ;)

Re: Movies about mental illness

"Sundays and Cybele" (1962)

I haven't seen this one in a very long time, but it was memorable.

Re: Movies about mental illness

I saw "Silver Lining's Playbook" and did not care for it at all.

And I saw "Girl, Interrupted", which I liked quite a bit. Jolie gave an outstanding, career-making performance for sure, but I thought Brittany Murphy was just as good, if not better.

Re: Movies about mental illness

Never really liked SLP. Something arrogant about it.

Murphy was superb in GI.
