Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

I don't mind The Burning and I might even rate it as better than the original FT13th, yet I prefer Maniac, The Prowler and Eyes Of A Stranger over them, all of which Tom Savini did the special make-up effects.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

Didn't "Eyes of a Stranger" have Lauren Tewes and Jennifer Jason Leigh? I liked that one.

"Maniac" was gruesome. I couldn't enjoy it.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

All of those films I mentioned are gruesome in their uncut form.

Maniac is perhaps the most gruesome and disturbing, being a genuine foray in the mind of disturbed and deranged killer with Mommy issues, yet the most gruesome is perhaps a dream sequence.

The Burning, The Prowler and Eyes Of A Stranger, (which has a strong sexual violence theme attributed to it as well), all have protracted graphic kill scenes too thanks to Tom Savini.

Yes, EOAS has Tewes and Leigh in it and they are both very good. The film is quite suspenseful too, with the stalking scenes and the panic of the women depicted.

Tewes is a feisty anchorwoman and is very daring and courageous in attempting to find all she can to bring the killer down, due to personal reasons of her own regarding her Helen Keller afflicted sister and suspicion that the killer lives near by.

Its sleazy, a bit trashy and sick, but it all works quite well.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

Really dig this one for a couple of reasons. First, the young folks in this one are basically to blame for the danger they find themselves in because they stay in the carnival after it closes; that's a nice departure from the hapless victims of unfortunate circumstances trope that's so common in slasher films.

Second, the monster in this film is surprisingly pitiable. I felt sorry for the poor freak. Moreover, it's the creature's overbearing dad who is the real monster of the piece.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

I agree. This actually had a plot… not some boogeyman just walking about, finding new and interesting ways to murder teenagers having sex.

..the monster in this film is surprisingly pitiable. I felt sorry for the poor freak.
How the father cruelly taunts his boy and ridicules him.

Because he was such a freak on the extreme level, the disgust his father feels is also understandable, but its old man also covered up its heinous crimes that were alluded too.

When I first saw The Funhouse at the cinema and the creature's face was revealed, I was in both shock and awe at what I was witnessing. It was terrifying to look at him and the snot that hung out of its nose in big globulets just added more grossness to the impact……😱

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

The list could go on and on there are so many from the era. I couldn't drop out Visiting Hours, so I had to make mine 11.

Do you use the 4 star rating system Mr. H? I'd say that only came about because of the t.v and movie guide books that Maltin et all devised and unless stated, majority may feel the rating is based around 5.

I like to use the 5 star, or 1 to 10 system that IMDB database utilizes. It makes more sense to me, like a top hotel is rated 5 stars or a 5 star general in the military. The 5 star can then easily be doubled to equate to the 10 scale system.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

I grew up on the Leonard Maltin guide, so yes, I am devoted to the **** rating system. And I think asterisks are pretty. What can I say?

Though the standard **** is a bit limiting, so I went ahead and started including the 1/4 * into my ratings. Why not?

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

I just re-watched Hell Night - 81'.

While it is not considered loved by many, its an early 80's slasher that I admire more than others.

It delivers what the title promises, a Hell Night, and does it with a nice spooky, gothic and suspenseful atmosphere that works.

The film is skillfully photographed and not overly lit and it uses its setting to the fullest potential.

There is slasher violence without overt graphic gore and the film is perhaps all the better for it. I was also fearful for the characters and I cared that they died. It was tragic when the monster man lifted up Jeff and threw him out the window.

The sequence when the carpet rises off the floor unbeknownst to the trapped prey, is still one of the scariest scenes I have seen in a slasher film.

I also liked that Seth came to the party by the films climax, as he was depicted as a jerk at the start, yet he did what he could to help the others and paid a price for it too.

Seeing Linda Blair as a final girl was a nice touch and it has a terrific ending.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!…

Good, BUT 1984 makes it the mid 80s, NOT the early 80s.

"THAT'S SOME BAD SHIT, HARRY!".

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

Nit picker :D

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!…

The early 1980s = 1980-3; mid 80s = 1984-6; late 80s = 1987-9.

The 9th decade of the 20th century = early = 1981-3; mid = 1984-7; late = 1988-90.

"THAT'S SOME BAD SHIT, HARRY!".

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!…

Early 80's gets an extra year, yet either side of the scale you listed could rate as early to mid if you want to play number semantics.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!…

Named decade (70s, 80s and 90s, for example):

Early = 0, 1, 2 & 3.

Mid = 4, 5 & 6.

Late = 7, 8 & 9.

Decade of a century:

Early = 1, 2 & 3.

Mid = 4, 5, 6 & 7.

Late = 8, 9 & (1)0.

"THAT'S SOME BAD SHIT, HARRY!".

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!…

I see that accuracy is key here with you.

Nothing is fixed and there are always going to be anomalies that crop up, especially regarding where only a numbered year is concerned, shooting dates and release dates especially when new year January is concerned.

Personally, I really don't care about when this was made/released. I think that it was one of the most original horror movies of the times. A monster who kills within one's nightmares??? That was a first!

I felt bad for the thing in the basement in this one. He was basically a big overgrown baby who didn't know his own strength.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

The last shot in that film is absolutely heartbreaking. Sometimes you don't root for the monster to die in a horror film. Moreover, it was the abusive father of the overgrown man-baby who was the real monster in The Unseen.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Early 80's slashers that are LOVED!!!

Moreover, it was the abusive father of the overgrown man-baby who was the real monster in The Unseen.

He was! If you want to go back even further, the father of the father had to have been a tyrant. That scene where Earnest is sitting up in the office, reliving that last conversation with his father, gives us the story of the sick family dynamics.

What was the movie with Sidney Lassick and Zelda Rubenstein? That one was different.
