Re: Carnival Rides

I have been wanting to do that one for awhile.
Of course with my luck, I will be the one on the seat where the chain breaks.

I heard someone say it gives the sense of flying.

OMG!!!!

Re: Carnival Rides

I almost barfed just looking at that thing.

I don't know how peeps can do it.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

I guess some of us just aren't the thrill seekers those people are.

On the flip side, maybe we find our thrills in more interesting ways?

Re: Carnival Rides

That damn swing ride was the worst of the worst for me. I think I rode it twice in my youth. The first time because I didn't know any better and the second time because I was a fool. The ride made me feel like I was going to go flying into the elements and nothing holding me up except two bits of cord.

I'd ride on the back of a killer whale before getting on the swing again.

I will say, though, that those carnival colors are intense and draw me right me in.

Re: Carnival Rides

I recall the first time I went on that swing ride I was fine. On a second visit it just didn't gel with me. Its a simple ride, but yes, it does seem kinda flimsy.

I love the midway lights and carnivals are always fun to go to in the evening. I have just as much fun looking at everything.

The Funhouse - 81' has one of the best representations of a carnival I have ever seen in a movie.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

Yes, The Funhouse is a fun time. Did the movie inspire your thread?

Re: Carnival Rides

We have a local Carnival this coming weekend, but I think I might stay away due to Covid hysteria.

I haven't been to a proper one for about 2 decades and gave it a notion.

Re: Carnival Rides

The carnival atmosphere at nighttime is intoxicating.

Re: Carnival Rides

And just think he went from this to Poltergeist in one year. They are both fun movies, but The Funhouse went almost unnoticed whereas Poltergeist was hugely successful.

Re: Carnival Rides

And just think he went from this to Poltergeist in one year.
Poltergeist was marketed on Spielberg's name too, (whom by many sources, pretty much directed the picture), plus it was more family orientated. The Funhouse was deliciously subversive.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

Yes, The Funhouse was darker. After Jaws, SS lost a certain edge (at least that's how I see it). Though I do like Poltergeist very much.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Carnival Rides

I like Poltergeist as well. I wanted Craig T. Nelson as my dad.

Hooper was pretty much a front for Spielberg, as he was slated to direct E.T. around the same time in the same region. Director's guild wouldn't allow it, so he was credited as producer only, but pretty much story-boarded everything for Hooper and was on the set for the most part.

Spielberg had full control after principal photography was complete and apparently Hooper was a coke head.

One cannot dismiss Hooper as a horror/terror director though, because his previous 3 efforts were very strong without Spielberg's influence.

————–

Aww, that's cute. I can see it.

I bet you wish you were Robbie when he hopped on his dad's back!

The family is overall very likable and adds to the movie's appeal.

Re: Carnival Rides

Nelson was a honey and I liked Jobeth Williams too. What happened to her career???

I like all of Spielberg's 70's efforts and Jaws - 75' is of course the apex of them all, but when he released Poltergeist - 82', its like he got back to that magic something that made Jaws so special.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

I like E.T. It's cute and heartwarming, but I didn't love it the way a lot of people did. I always preferred Poltergeist.

The Jobeth Williams' character is my favorite character in the movie. I get chills when the hallway extends itself and she starts running down the hallway, slowly at first, but quickly picking up speed. It was effective.

Have you seen "The Sugarland Express"? I like Goldie in it and maybe it's her best role ever. It seems like we already had this conversation recently. Or maybe I am just losing my mind or maybe it was in a dream.

But, yes, I also like the tv movie Duel and the short episode he did with Joan Crawford called "Eyes" from 1969. I know you don't care for JC and I totally get that. But she's very good playing a cold, imperial bitch who gets her comeuppance and then some.

E.T. is a sweet and warm film and is very likeable. Has a nice early 80's atmosphere about it too, just like Poltergeist.

There were some very effective moments in Poltergeist and it was extremely inventive. These things hadn't been done before in the way that Spielberg and Hooper presented them, plus it still managed to be scary. Williams was put through a lot in that film and the swimming pool sequence is classic horror.

It still holds up quite well today and a lot of that is to do with the family dynamic, plus the smooth metaphor ending is absolutely perfect. It couldn't have ended any better and rounded the film out as a complete whole. It leaves one very satisfied, without a feeling of being short-changed for the experience just witnessed.

Yes, we have had discussion before about TSE. Hawn is very good and I like the film immensely. A few silly car stunts near the start, like its a Smokey and the Bandit sorta film, but after that it settles itself down. If anything, it was a precursor to SATB.

Duel is top-notch road thriller too. I haven't seen the short JC episode Spielberg did. Spielberg is very good with actors and he may have coxed a decent performance out of her.

Re: Carnival Rides

I go with Rick Moranis sometimes, he likes the funhouse with the wacky mirrors, makes him look taller or something. I just like the funnel cake.

Re: Carnival Rides

Ha ha ha,I remember as I teen,me and a friend went on a ride totally shit faced ,called the Hurricane and he puked his guts out all over the ride operator, all I remember is me and my buddy running for our lives 😂

Melting down over top boy

Re: Carnival Rides

I have done The Hurricane, but I don't really like it. Makes me too dizzy. I don't get dizzy on The Rainbow.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

I threw up on one called "The Spider" once.Normally I wouldn't get sick but I had a real bad son burn the day before. My buddy literally said my skin turned from red to green lol.

Re: Carnival Rides

I think The Spider is similar to The Octopus ride.

Nah! Been there, wish I hadn't done that…

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

What does The Rainbow do? Is it just a giant see saw in the sky? Or does it do surprise moves? I could handle the first scenario.

I tend to be more conservative as these things go. The ones that go up in the sky and throw you around haphazardly make me nauseous and are just no fun. The Scrambler was always more my speed. Though I do love rollercoasters. And I enjoy wooden rollercoasters more than the steel/metal ones. The only ones I don't care for are where there's nothing under your feet. No thanks!

Hey, I just looked it up, Toasted Cheese, and The Scrambler over here is called The Cha Cha in Australia!

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Carnival Rides

The Rainbow is yes similar to a see saw, it just does a 360 deg or 180 from its axis/middle. The platform swings side to side both ways and then goes right to the top and stops and then drops down again either to your left or right, you just don't know which.

Its really a lot of fun and you just go high and slide to the left and right of your seat. Its like a horizontal Pirate Ship. Pretty cool!

Cha Cha is a cool name and also known as The Sizzler. Do you like The Scrambler?

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

Yes, I like The Scrambler. It's on the mild side, but for me it's got just the right amount of zip. I'd almost describe the ride as breezy.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Carnival Rides

Would you say overall though, you are sensitive to most extreme kind of rides.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with The Scrambler, but it has been many many moons since I last went on one.

Re: Carnival Rides

I've also seen it called the Merry Mixer

Re: Carnival Rides

Yes, I think that I am sensitive to extreme rides. The twisty Octopus type rides make physically sick and can ruin the rest of the day for me and the ones like the Swing I just cannot do 'em!

The most adventurous I get are rollercoasters, which for the most part I love.

When I was a kid, my parents and sister and I went to King's Island (Cincinatti) every year. My favorite rollercoaster was the Beast. My mother would never get on the rollercoaster, so it was always my sister, my dad and me, which meant that one of us would have to share a car with a stranger. As I came into my teen years, I'd volunteer to be the 3rd man, with hopes of getting to sit next to an attractive man. If his thigh touched mine, I would be on a high the rest of the day.

The only ride my mom liked was the boat ride. It moved at a snail's pace and was all inside and could be air-conditioned. Mom hated the heat. But it had the atmosphere of a Disney-inspired funhouse and I liked it, too.

Those are pretty good childhood memories for me.

Re: Carnival Rides

I'm not sure, because I think I read that it defied physics the way it was shown, so could be a hoax.

Check out this one:

Re: Carnival Rides

The commentary sure did seem light-hearted for what was going on. lol

After the accident footage, at first I thought the people just got up and got right back in their seats as of nothing had happened. Made me laugh.

The first one did seem a little off.

A gentle thrill. lol

Re: Carnival Rides

The light-hearted tone seems a bit disrespectful and cheesy for the tragedy that happened…."..this was a merry-go-down"…

That has sealed it for me though. I will never ever go on those swing things again.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Carnival Rides

Yeah, "merry go down"!! Wow, I just hope that nobody was seriously hurt.

It's actually a wonder that the rides don't malfunction more often.

I haven't thought of this for a long time, but on King's Island unofficial "gay day", June 1991, me and a bunch of friends went to the amusement park and on that day, 3 people were killed in TWO separate incidents. Two young men were electrocuted when a live wire got loose and ended up in a pond they were standing in. Then later that same day, a drunk woman got on a ride called Flight Commander and because she was so drunk, her body was limp and she passed out and slipped underneath the safety bar and fell to her death.

Re: Carnival Rides

Wow! Terrible

I don't like to feel like I'm falling. That's why most rides scare me
