Special and Visual Effects : What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Keep in mind, I'm not referring to an effect that looks dated now but was fine for its time.

Anyway, for me it's that scene in Jaws 3-D when the shark breaks the glass. That effect was terrible even for 1983.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

When Lou Ferigno turns into the hulk and his clothes rip and eyes turn green wearing that really bad wig.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

There are worse, but this is one of the funniest!

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

I still find that effect creepy.

For its time it shocked many and I saw it as kid on t.v. in the 70's and was freaked out big time.

Many peeps are afraid of spiders and it made sure to keep that fear instilled in them.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

That may be why I first became terrified of spiders…
That and these!

I'm surprised that this didn't turn me off CATS!

I still love them.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Eh, I'd refer to that one as dated rather than outright terrible.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

I didn't say it was terrible. I was discussing the fear of spiders and cats with someone else.

Feel free to share a few more up to date worst special effects you have ever seen.
I'm interested.
You didn't specify how old the movies had to be.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

The criteria is simple; if it's below par even for it's era, it's a bad effect.

Another example I'd pick is the CGI for Ang Lee's Hulk. Even contemporary critics and fans said he looked fake.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

I love it!

I've never seen this.
Just like there's a very thin line between corniness and brilliance there's a very thin line between creepy and ridiculous.

If this style can be redone today the right way it could be profound.

To me the music screws it up. The powerful score takes away what's happening.

Take away the music, make it more personal and you got a really creepy moment.

CGI
Because it is fake it looks fake.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Are you really lumping in the comprehensive term "CGI" as the worst special effect?

CGI is practically a synonym for special effect. It is used in any movie post-2000 with a special effect.

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Not all CGI…..

Some stories simply lend themselves to this wonderful technology.

I am a HUGE fan of the 1930's King Kong. THAT was great technology!
I find what they did at that time, amazing! I'm impressed.

I am only saying that that Peter Jackson's King Kong is a superb example of CGI and the incredible advances in technology.

We all started somewhere.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Yes.

But since the board is asking for one particular example, I would have to say the dinosaur stampede in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. It was so bad, I mentally checked out of the rest of the movie and have hated it ever since.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

The hell sequence in Spawn.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

The CGI they used to remove Henry Cavill's mustache in Justice League.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Ugh, I remember that moment. Even before I knew what they did, I thought something seemed just a bit off. Looked a little uncanny.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Superman 4's effects were dead on arrival. The original film made 9 years earlier had better flying effects.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Well, I’ve got a doozy for you. This is from the 1986 film, Deadly Friend, with Kristy Swanson, and the kid that played Albert Ingalls in Little House. This is literally the worst special effect that I’ve ever seen in a film. You can even see Kristy Swanson struggling to hold back her laughter, after she throws the basketball at the head of the old lady that was in Throw Mama From the Train.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

The old lady started standing there screaming before Kristy even picked up the ball. 🤣🤣🤣

For some reason, I didn’t get your notification. This site can be buggy at times.

But yes, it’s just plain awful. We’re talking 1950’s sci fi rocketship, with visible support strings, and candle wick rocket exhaust, awful

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

That makeup effect is hilarious!

Its the 'R' rated cut of the kill. I have on dvd and the unrated version goes on for a bit longer and looks fake as. Sometimes less is more.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Oh my. It went on far too long as it was I’ll have to look for the alternative ending.

The infamous 'basketball' scene in which Samantha kills Elvira with a basketball is extended to show more of Elvira's head exploding all over the wall and her headless body walking directly from the wall instead of cutting back to Samantha's face and then showing the body walking around as in the VHS release.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

In the unrated dvd, there is also a longer sequence of the dream sequence where Samantha stabs a broken glass vase into her fathers chest. There is a lot more blood squirting out.

You can watch the unrated cut on here.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Thanks. I’m pretty sure that I did watch it from this site, so that must be the version that I saw. I even commented on the Deadly Friend page, about the basketball death scene, that I forgot all about

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Okay that's easily the funniest death scene ever.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

I just thought of this one..

And I dunno if it is out there but there are these helicopter explosions that also come to mind where they animate fire around them to make them look like they blew up.

I think Black Sunday has one of those.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

All of Green Lantern.

Re: What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

The Entity - 82' is quite an effective and creepy supernatural thriller for the most part and boasts a terrific central performance from Barbara Hershey and doesn't rely on big effects to generate its shocks and scares.

The climax visual effects trapping the entity into a optically imposed demonic iceberg were not par for the course though. Not after comparison to the quality and top-notch for its time optical fx for Poltergeist around the same time.

I couldn't find a clip but a scene from Lake Placid 2 of a crocodile destroying a boat. Saw it once years ago and i've never forgotten it because it looked hilariously bad.
