Directors : Directors You Can't Stand?

Directors You Can't Stand?

Their work… If you dislike them as people, that's cool, too, but nothing is worse than an overrated director who makes shitty movies.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Ang Lee that dumb bastard behind BrokeBack Mountain. The one who somehow managed to completely fuck up 2003s Hulk

Beware the sound of one hand clapping.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

exactly way overrated holy fuck everytime i watch an ang lee movie i'm like what this is supposed to be good?

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Lee has made a couple of interesting films, but way over-rated.

Brokeback Mountain is a cure for insomnia.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

It's so boring. Heath Ledger gave a good performance as a super sad person and the touching, pretty score was also super sad.

So BBM scores two points and both of them are designed to make you sad.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

The film was so over-hyped and it was made for straighties like the cheesy Philadelphia and made out to be groundbreaking. We can't offend em' too much….

Make these dense breeders watch Taxi zum Klo and that will shock em' out of dullsville.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

If they watched "Taxi Zum Klo", they wouldn't know what hit them.

That movie is still a potent whiff on plain-faced reality. And at 40+ years, it likely always will be. That movie is so refreshing. I've always liked it.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Frank Capra. I can’t stand a large percentage of his films.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I don't like Frank Capra, either.

The only director(s) whose every movie I have hated are the Coen Brothers.

I may have liked a few, but I see their name, I largely avoid.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

"The only director(s) whose every movie I have hated are the Coen Brothers."

They are way the fuck overrated who make super boring movies and half the time I cannot figure out WTF is going on in their movies or why this or that happened.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

i imagine a lot of people are going to put john waters on this list bc he is very polarizing of a director you pretty much either love him or hate him as a director. i like his movies.

lukejbarnett

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Kevin Smith. Neither loved or hated his movies. His generation were the seniors when we were freshmen so I gave him that respect. But after what he's done to the MOTU franchise I hate the bastard.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Wtf is MOTU? Masters of the Universe?

Anyway, I like his work. Fucking loved Tusk. Quite fucked up.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Yes.

I've not seen or heard of Tusk. The last movie of his that I watched was call "Red" I believe from 2010-ish?

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Red State? I haven't seen that yet even though I have it on DVD. It's one of those rainy day selections that hasn't happened yet. But I'll probably like it. The only stuff of his so far I haven't taken to is when he uses a movie or short film to simply be a vehicle for his daughter. But I get it, if I were a director I'd probably cast my kid if it were her dream, too. Worth a shot.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Smith was always overrated.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I had to look up Kevin Smith to make sure he wasn't the loveable guy from King Of Queens and Paul Blart movies. He isn't, but holy crap, Kevin Smith looks CRAZY in his opening Google Photos! O.O :O

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Oliver Stone. I just don't care for any of his movies, The Doors being the exception.

Woody Allen. Not a huge fan of his movies, Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex, But Were Afraid To Ask, being the exception.
While it's really none of my business, and really doesn't affect me personally, I think he has done some shitty things in his personal life.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

"The Doors' is one of the worst movies I've seen.. I don't like Stone because I think he's a CIA plant. He takes the best subjects, distorts them, and the public discredits the topic itself by referencing his dumb movies. His documentary "The Untold History About The United States" is good, but it's shit EVERY American should have known by 2002 (FOIA that revealed the Gulf of Tonkin lie to get us into Vietnam).

With Woody Allen, most of his movies are juvenile, stupid, with sprinkles of Freud and Jung to divert that, although I do love "Annie Hall"

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I hated JFK and Born On July… etc…

I don't like Stone because I think he's a CIA plant.

Personally, I think that he is a fool with a juvenile imagination!

I agree with your assessment of Woody Allen until you come to "Annie Hall".

No big deal though. You, and many like it. It's all a matter of taste, and I respect that.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Believe me, I understand. It's just like food. But the one thing I'll tell those movie-lovers is that you should at least TRY everything. It's like those people who say they hate a certain food, but too afraid to taste it. I think a big plus for a message board is to try to give people recommendations THEY like, which is why I ask people for their favorite movies, so they can hopefully see a great movie they wouldn't have originally.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I'm having this conversation right now in a chat room. Movies/music I found from people who had similar taste, but would mention something I didn't know.

It would be like if you mentioned a favorite movie of yours that I didn't know. I'd check it out right away because I know you have good taste but you actually participate on here, and not with the stupid drama.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Thank you for the compliment. I am always interested in the movies you talk about as well. Your threads are always thought provoking.

Pssstt….. I'll let you in on a little secret… I do get caught up in the stupid drama now and again…. I occasionally even start it every once in a while.
Please don't hold it against me.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I love Woody Allen. And not just his movies, but I like him personally. "Annie Hall" is excellent, "Manhattan" was not my favorite.

"Bullets Over Broadway" was hilarious.

But my favorite WA movie is "Radio Days", such a warm and loving depiction of a certain time and place. The family is so lovable and endearing. And one of the best group of tunes ever assembled for a movie. I could have been happy living in the 40s.
Have you seen it? It's also very funny.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I thank god for Woody Allen. He is a genuine American auteur amongst the sausage factory of mainstream film-makers. Allen was a breath of fresh air.

I can understand many not liking his films, yet most of these people wouldn't be interesting in seeing film-makers pushing boundaries and artistic creativity with their craft. Love or dislike his films, after viewing an Allen offering, they can tend to stay with me and there is no doubt when he gets it right, his take his sublime.

Radio Days is an absolute delight. As Annie Hall was his radiant delight from the 70's, Radio Days is his 80's charmer. I can't believe I held off so long in seeing it.

Baz Luhrmann

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Mel Brooks. His comedies are 90 minute fart jokes. Compare him to his contemporaries like Woody Allen and the weakness of his work is glaring.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Funny you should say this. Just yesterday I tried to make it through A History of the World Part 1 and had to turn it off about 40 minutes into it. I tried hard to stick with it, but just couldn't–as you suggest, it was simply too juvenile.

I'm wondering if I'll have the same reaction to watching Young Frankenstein over again, a movie I have fond memories of but haven't seen for a while.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Brooks is not even relevant now but he's one who stands out in my mind. I just never got his popularity. Well actually I do get. It's low brow stuff which appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

young frankenstein holds up better cause it’s less of a parody and more of a film

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I doubt I'd like "Blazing Saddles" today. I don't even remember liking it back then, but I do have it on VHS.

To me, Woody made "Annie Hall", and the rest isn't much. But I guess that movie forced me to watch those made before. I guess "Manhattan" is a good movie. The movie after was an homage to Bergman (enough of the homage!) with "Interiors" and the mockumentary after was alright, "Zelig", but I couldn't believe the same guy made a piece of shit like "Midnight In Paris" which sounded so great when someone on a movie board described it, but man, it was so bad.

If you want funny, watch "Buffalo '66".. Nothing comes close. I can't think of another funny movie. Maybe parts of "Cuckoo's Nest" and "Harry and Tonto".. There are a few funny moments in "La Strada". If I want comedy, I have to (re) watch stand-up comedy, which must be the difference between looking at heroin, snorting heroin, and injecting it.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I thought Blazing Saddles was a fart joke when I first saw it. I don't laugh at fart jokes. I think liberal media only loved it for the black cowboy. I guess that was innovative back then.

Brooks only good movie was Young Frankenstein. But even it gets tedious the second time you see it.

Early Woody Allen films are great, before he idolized Diane Keaton. Bananas, Sleeper and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* are great.

I like all his later movies as well. What, are you "woke" now and concerned about Mia Farrow's hysterics? I can't see how any thinking adult cannot acknowledge Woody Allen's genius.

But for comedy on film, only Monty Python is nonpareil.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

The women are, I think, the best thing in a Mel Brooks movie, i.e., Madeline Kahn, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Bea Arthur…

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I loved Teri Garr. She was on Star Trek! I'm not a fan of Madeline Kahn though she's related to the girl I almost married. I just don't like Brooks.

Was Bea Arthur in his movies?

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

I like all four of the women I mentioned. A lot. I think they are all talented funny women. MK is probably my least favorite of the four, but her impersonation of Marlene Dietrich in BS was, I thought, quite funny. And her picking and choosing from the line-up of bare-bottomed studs in "History of the World, Part 1" was hilarious.

I like Cloris Leachman as well.

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

She's one of my all-time favorites.

Cloris also gave the most charming, breathless Oscar acceptance speech that I have ever seen.

She looks radiant here. I also read that she and Gene Hackman hooked up later that night. I have no idea if that's true or not, but if so, Hackman certainly made the better choice over Ms. Welch, who was hot in her way, but looked like she would not cut loose in bed.

I dunno, for sex I'd choose Welch over Leachman. Just sayin'.

"Buffalo 66" is the only funny movie you've seen? Really?

I know it's all subjective, but I don't see how this would be possible. One funny movie.

Oh, well.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

"Buffalo 66" is the only funny movie you've seen? Really?
I have seen this film twice.

I barely recall it and if I even snickered once, it doesn't register with what. I just thought it was a typical independent grunge offering that many young film-makers were offering in the late 90's to early millennial.

I found Series 7 - '01 more amusing.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Directors You Can't Stand?

Yes. There's a few funny moments in
-Harry and Tonto
-La Strada
-One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

but I wouldn't call them funny movies, but they are some of my favorites.

I hold a high standard for things I love, especially after you've seen the best of the best. I seem to get my humor mainlined via stand-up comedians like Mort Sahl, and even though I've seen hundreds of comedians live or on TV (even going to the Melbourne Comedy Festival), I can only name 10 I like – all male, and all from North America.

I occasionally read funny comments on the YouTube comments, but a large part of that is the video and the type of people with my kinda taste.

Where are your funny movies?
