Economics, Business, Money, Finance : What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like it?

What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like it?

Exactly six months after graduating high school, I was hired as a stock boy at a liquor store just a ten-minute walk from home, making $5 an hour. I celebrated by treating myself to two movies (“Home Alone 3” and “Scream 2”) in an effort to milk my last two days of freedom before entering the work force. To quote Charlie Harper while filling in for his brother Alan at his job, “Okaaay, where can I hang myself?” It was boring, my boss was a tyrant, and I couldn't remember where anything was, which made the customers very impatient. My boss would even say "He's new" (when I wasn't) in an effort to not lose business. On top of that, he had twice made me cry [within his presence instead of me going somewhere privately], which was mostly due to being somewhat accident-prone with inventory. Every time I broke a bottle, he threatened to dock my pay, which as it turned out, he was bluffing. Looking back, I wish he had meant what he said in a calm, respectful tone… rather than yell at me and not do it. Nearly five months after working there, I quit — called my boss that Monday morning when he opened up shop [when I was scheduled to work] to tell him I'm not coming in. He said, "I feel bad," so I said something to the effect of "Okay. Well, bye." In his defense, he treated me to breakfast every morning, and gave me a year-end bonus on Christmas Eve despite working there just three days. In addition, he told me to pick my mom's favorite wine for him to gift wrap up for me to give to her (one of his customers). To this day, I still have the signed Christmas card that my bonus was enclosed in. Very glad that I didn't throw it away… because a little over a year after I quit, my boss died. I got the bad news of his supposed illness from my next boss: the day before the 1-year anniversary of my last day at the liquor store, I started working at a bowling alley. Turns out that my boss was also a customer at that liquor store, due to the bowling alley's bar. One day when he arrived at the alley, he said to me, "I just saw your old boss. He looks like THIS" while sticking up his index finger. My mom told me he didn't look well, either, and that he might've been HIV Positive. Needless to say, I went to the liquor store to hug and offer my condolences to his mother (a sweet little old lady) who also stood post during my employment there. On my very first pay day, she advised me to put my thick wad of bills safely in my pocket, as she was well-aware that I will be commuting home late at night by myself in a deserted neighborhood. Bless her heart! You never forget your first job, and I will forever be grateful, despite my boss's lack of people's skills. Never in my life would I wish harm on my worst enemy. school uniform store the 1st year we wore school uniforms

$5.00/hour

I got tired and self-conscious there.

Your story was very interesting! I also cherish some things, but your experience was quite.

So you worked at your high school?

Re: What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like

No.. my mom got me a job that hired high schoolers, and I was 15 and going into my 2nd year. I think you have to be 14 or something.

It was a nice shop in a nice plaza, in the New Orleans area.

One week after graduation I started working in a law office for $97.00/week in 1971. I worked for a highly place attorney, and learned a lot about the law. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it was great experience.

I was 16 and homeless so I worked in a frozen goods factory saving up my money to buy household items, etc.. I'll never forget paying around £40 for a clear glass kettle that I just HAD to have only to suffer nothing but limescale problems until Ingot fed up and threw it away. Never.again.

Oh yes. I don’t know why they get these really tall people to be the Easter Bunny. Most little kids are terrified of a huge bunny.

Still, that’s a really funny experience.

I’m sure!

OMG that’s hilarious! We all gotta start somewhere. 🤷‍♂️ 😂 Interesting fact: Josh Pais who portrayed AND voiced Raphael in the first Ninja Turtles movie, suffered from claustrophobia. So after filming Raphael's scenes, he would have to take the helmet off very quickly. Thus, the “claustrophobic” exchange between Donatello and Casey Jones.

Trust me, it’s not nearly as bad as playing a Ninja Turtle. Those costumes were made of VERY heavy latex, so you had the good life.

I had a paper route when I was 12. I delivered The Boston Herald every morning in South Boston. I forget what the salary was (it wasn't good though) but the tips made up for it.

Re: What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like

My brother and I delivered papers. All I remember getting paid was tips.

Re: What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like

I've always hated work. That's it.

Re: What was your very first job, salary, how old were you, and how did you like

When I was 11, I worked in a convenient store, kinda like you, stocking shelves, coolers, etc. for $2/hr. under the table. At 13, I worked in a restaurant owned by a neighbor, who would pick me up, and she'd drop me off in the evening, except on Friday and Saturday nights. She paid me $2.50/ or $3/hr, plus all the food I could eat, lol. I remember my uncle stopping by since it was a pretty hot spot (as would the mayor) and he said, "Man, you've gained weight". Worked at Kroger (after she sold the restaurant) until my freshman year in college, making $4.75/hr, and went from bagger to working in the hot-dog stand in the parking lot, which was the best job. Everyone I worked with (mostly people from high school) hung out there, and in my senior year of high school, I got a second job at a lawn care company (telemarketing) for $6/hr.

20 years later, the minimum wage has only gone up to $7.25/hr…
