Schindler's List : Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

"and then get all triggered when you tell them one doesn't like it as a whole."
_____________

Yes, I've always found that so off-putting. It's soooo transparently "virtuous" and yet it makes you the odd one out.

Another great example is Meryl Streep, who I think gave some really good performances earlier in her career. But if you say you don't think she's all that, people get offended. Regarding Streep as the greatest seems to elevate some people.

Also (and I've said this before), Meryl Streep does NOT have the capacity to instill fear and I also don't think she can be genuinely funny. Though I did enjoy "She-Devil".

On the other hand, Sissy Spacek pretty much ran the gauntlet in "3 Women" - pitiful, frightening and hilarious, all rolled into one.

Spacek was even convincingly sexual in her post-transformation.

And to think, Shelly was even better!!!

Streep has been a very enjoyable actress to follow over the course of the latter decades of the 20th century up until now. She has given many interesting and skilled characterizations.

Streep and Duvall are the same age, yet I couldn't possibly imagine her doing what Duvall achieved in 3 Women. She would have wanted to have intellectualized her, or give her more dignity and would have eschewed the entire reason for Millie's character existence.

Yes, that Spacek was sublime in 3 Women and that Duvall was even better, is really saying something about that extraordinary film which gives me goosebumps just thinking about how impressive I find it to be.

And who wouldn't want to watch the terrific art of 3 Women over stuffy Schindler's List any day!!!???

You and I are never more on the same page as we are with this movie. ♥️♥️♥️

"3 Women" is practically the definition of sublime.

It's maybe the only movie I can think of where its genius seems to be almost purely accidental.

It's also got more layers than any movie I can think of.

Ya got that!

I rate it in my top 10 drama films of all time and operates on many different levels and only gets better on each viewing.

It just unfolded as it did and it would have also been a difficult one to pitch on paper as well.

It just all came together so naturally and organic without any pretense, which is what was written all over something like SL.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

If Millie had been offered to Streep, I wonder what she would have thought about the character.

Streep has always been a feminist, and that would have killed the essence of what Millie was all about. Pretty much like what you just said!

In all honesty, I think Streep might have been too embarrassed to try and portray Millie.

But this is a good thing, because Shelly Duvall was born to play Millie "No, I'm American!" Lammoreaux!

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

Streep wouldn't have understood Mille and she was more about signalling herself as modern female actress and liberating her gender.

The touches of black comedic wickedness in 3 Women, was perhaps not something Streep would have gotten a grasp on either at that stage of her career.

She was just perfect and lovely though as Linda in The Deer Hunter.

Yes, she was lovely and gave a fine, delicate performance in TDH.

A+

"F"

Spielberg should stick to making films about sharks or aliens. He's a crummy historian and it's obvious where his loyalties lie (with the illegal and criminal state of Israel). The government of Malaysia banned the film, saying that it "reflects the privilege and the virtues of a certain race only." I agree with the Malaysians.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

I completely DISAGREE with the dictatorial Malaysian establishments decree on the film. They more likely side with the Nazis.

Not to mention Jewish is not technically a race.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

I give it a 'C-" or **

I didn't care for "Schindler's List" at all. Honestly, I don't know why I'm bothering with **

It's barely **

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

Even though serious subject matter and top notch credentials, I don’t even find it sublime nor involving.

It was what PK would have described as "hard labor".

And it was a chore to sit through.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

And Kael liked 1941, which I do too. I find it most amusing, enjoyable and impressive to view.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

I've never actually seen 1941.

The only part I watched was the beginning where Susan Backlinie hangs onto the periscope or whatever it was.

I just had to be reassured that she was doing okay!

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

That part was hilarious.

1941 is zany and ott wacky, but it has a nice warmth and nostalgic charm to it as well and it most certainly looks exceptional.

I had a big crush on Treat Williams at the time and Nancy Allen is in it too.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

Treat Williams was a hottie and I will always go for Nancy Allen.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

Not to mention Tim Matheson, whose entire plot point is trying to get into the pants of Allen and she will only do it up in the air.

I gave Saving Ryan's Privates a 9/10 to go along with it.

Re: Grade the Movie "SCHINDLER's LIST" ?

It's a film I only care to watch every few years.
While I think that this is a fine film, lately, the subject matter isn't something I care to think about.

GRADE??? From "A+" to "F"?

What the HELL is that?

This isn't a test, and Steven Spielberg isn't a student… or is he?

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
