Health & Fitness : Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Last year, around the middle of the year, I suddenly had severe back pain and was unable to abate it. I was told it "might be" a kidney stone. I had to develop a kidney infection before they paid enough attention to tell me it was, with certainty, a kidney stone and to give me a single dose of Toridol.

Tonight, I suddenly developed stomach pain so severe it constricted my breathing and prevented me from moving. I am sitting in the ER now, sweating bullets and trying to swallow enough air to feel sated, typing out this stupid, no1 cares bullshit on filmboards to distract myself from the pain whilst the doctor takes his sweet time coming to see me.

I know it's not his fault and I'm lucky to be okay enough NOT to require immediate attention, but damn is it disheartening to show up to the hospital and to not get any relief right away. You get this idea in your head that ER = not having to hurt anymore but it never seems to work that way.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Thanks, M. You're a sweetheart.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Oh, damn, that's terrible, Jackie. I hope things work out. Let me just toss you a small crumb of consolation by saying that at least, with your medical emergency, you are actually IN an emergency room. It coulda' been worse!

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

You're right!! Thank you for the positive perspective.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

typing out this stupid, no1 cares bullshit

We do care! Sorry you're going through that. I hope the doctor sees you soon. Keep us updated when you can.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Thanks, Crystal. So far, the doctor says I need a CAT scan due to a very elevated white blood cell count. Thank God for insurance.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Did the doctor say what the possible causes might be?

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

He gave a variety of concerns. I know that's not useful; I'll update when I have more info. The cuff is tourniquetting my arm at the moment so it's hard to type.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Is the CT to check your appendix?

I know ERs can be terrible and I’ve been on both sides. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

I don't think so, as the pain came when he pressed the left side and the middle, not the right. I'll find out in 45 minutes what the scan shows. Thank you for the kind response.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Gosh that sounds awful, I hope you get seen soon and that all is well with you.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

I'm waiting for the results of the scan now. Poor hubby is here with me despite having work at 6. Thank you for the care.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

You're welcome and of course he is, he's a keeper!

Fingers crossed for something easily remedied in your results.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

The affliction will require follow-ups, medication, and a special diet, but I'm not being admitted and am writing this from the comfort of my desk at home.

Thank you again for chatting with me.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

You're welcome. Sounds a bit like diverticulitis where you have to avoid nuts and too much roughage.

Anyway, I'm glad you're home and hopefully in less pain, you take it easy now 😊

Both of my parents had that

Thank you, Steve. It's good advice, and very true.

I'm sorry, Jacky, it might be your gall bladder

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

I’m sure it’s better than the UK. I fucked my knee ligaments playing football when I was a kid and had to wait about 7 hours to see a doctor.

I got a bad concussion in another football injury and had to wait ages then too. I kept puking in the A&E waiting room.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

That sounds absolutely horrendous. You must have been in excruciating pain.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Diverticula issue? Unless you show up at the ER with either a heart attack, gunshot wound, head injury, or BP off the charts, they let you languish. Glad you have it all sorted out. It's terrible waiting and not knowing what is going on. Here's hoping for a quick recovery.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Liver issue. Believe it or not, the doctor suspects that I must have eaten contaminated food prepared by someone infected with Hepatitis A. It's the most manageable (and the only temporary) version of Hepatitis, so I suppose I'll take it. I suppose I'll be saving bucketloads of money from now on due to never ordering takeout again, as well. Gross.

I'll know for sure when I call back on Monday for a follow-up on the panel they withdrew. That's what I get for not having gotten the vaccine since I was eleven.

What the actual fuck.

I can never eat out again.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

So the food preparer with Hep A basically spat in food or didn’t wash there hands after using the crapper?

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Bingo. 🙃 It's enough to make you cook from home for life.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

That’s awful, so you should recover 100 percent from this? I hope.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Right? I mean, obviously there are always risks associated with allowing other people to make your food, but you never really consider that they can give you a goddamn fecal-oral infection.

Fucking

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Exactly. I’ve never heard of it before today, but now it’s one of those things I’m always going to think about. I hate it here. 😫

Glad you’re feeling better though. Hep A is the best case scenario here. If you get the chance, I definitely recommend looking into getting vaccinated. I had to get all three Hep vaccines (A, B, and D coinfection) for my clinicals and it was totally worth it.

Right? You’d think there would be a better awareness on the importance of hygiene (ESPECIALLY IN A FOOD BUSINESS)… but I guess not. This is just so disgusting and vile.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

I feel all right. The symptoms are pretty minimal thus far. I'm following the diet they gave me, so hopefully the abdominal pain stays away.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Oh wow! How horrible! I'm so sorry you are going through this. Is this a matter of having a report to the department of health? How long does the doctor say this will last? I wonder if the person who transmitted it knows he/she has it? Do they do contact tracing?

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

I’m sorry to hear that, Jackie.

That said, you must rmbrace the slowness of the ER. Accept it; you cannot change it. Learn to really love the experience.

I recall after dislocating my shoulder, I was in agony. It felt like my arm got ripped out of its socket since, well, it did. They took forever to get me painkillers. Eventually they offered fentanyl. After that point, I was having a great time.

Lesson is: breath in through your nose and get very high.

Cheerio.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

Isn’t enhaling things through your nose and getting high what led to your nose falling off Putin you dumb c.nt?

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

It’s also what healed my nose. Yin and yang. The circle of life.

Re: Why Are ERs So Damn Slow (TMI vent)

The doctor wanted to give me narcotics straightaway, which was a no-go with me. I was unable to sit still, so he was only trying to help, but opiates should really always be a last resort. He did give me Toradol, though, which helped a lot.

I bet you did have a great time on fentanyl. I'd say you earned the joyride after having ripped your arm out of your socket. Jesus Christ.

Initially I told them I didn’t want it. Eventually I was so glad I relented.

I’ve never heard of Toradol. Hope it helped
