List your 10 favorite movies of the 1940s

This will be tough, because I love to rank everything in order, but that makes it fun, too

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Shoeshine
Bicycle Thief
The Grapes of Wrath
La Tera Trema
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Citizen Kane
Meet John Doe
The Lost Weekend
The Ox-Bow Incident

I left out twenty great movies… GREAT decade for movies!

Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946)
At Land (1944)
Meshes of the Afternoon
(1943)

- 3 short films by Maya Deren i just had to include bc they are so important to me and for my perception of what the art of filmmaking is all about, hence they're on top of them all.

now to the actual 10 feature films i adore the most:

The Great Dictator (Charles Chaplin, 1940)
Les enfants du paradis / Children of Paradise (Marcel Carné, 1945)

Banshun / Late Spring (Yasujirô Ozu, 1949)
Rebecca (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940)
The Red Shoes (Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1948)

others i loved:

Ivan Groznyy I / Ivan the Terrible, Part I (Sergei M. Eisenstein, 1944)
Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941)
La belle et la bête / Beauty and the Beast (Jean Cocteau, 1946)
Sciuscià /Shoe-Shine (V. De Sica, 1946)
Le silence est d'or / Silence Is Golden (René Clair, 1947)

Re: List your 10 favorite movies of the 1940s

"Day of Wrath" would be in my Top 15. I think I've seen all of Dreyer's movies - he didn't have too many, saw them once only, but liked them very much.

Maybe I'll watch a movie you listed that I hadn't seen today.
