Justice League
Transformers
Fast 8

But all will make big bucks no matter how rubbish they are

Power Rangers

Re: OT: Big Movies In 2017 That Will LIkely be Crap

I'm really hoping that it turns out to be decent at best. But looking at the credits of the director and both writers.... Probably not.

The only thing that can induce a shred of hope is that one of the writers wrote Flight ...

Likely?

Transformers has been a steaming pile of dung ever since we got graced with orangeboy mcawkward and watching bumblebee urinate on a government agent in the first one.

Re: OT: Big Movies In 2017 That Will LIkely be Crap

I can't even hate on the Fast and the Furious franchise. A couple of them, maybe only the 1st and 5th, were kind of decent. They do dumb fun well. As silly as the stories and characters are, the ridiculousness of the stunts/shootouts/set pieces are worth at least one viewing...

Anyway, I'm dreading Skull Island. King Kong is simply untouchable to me. I liked the '70s remake as a kid, but there really is no reason to shoot for this again...outside of cashing in on a "brand" of course. The original is pretty much the perfect blockbuster.

XXX should be pretty sh!t. Although it looks like they're going more Fast & Furious than Hollywood's version of a cool, modern James Bond than the either of originals...could be dumb fun. I may never find out.

I'm torn on the potential quality of Bladerunner, but not a huge fan of the original so it won't have to reach some insane heights to get a pass from me.

But these will be sure to disappoint:

Ghost in the Shell
Justice League
The Great Wall
It
The Mummy
The new Underworld movie
Jumanji
Alien: Covenant
Power Rangers
Baywatch
The Six Billion Dollar Man
Thor: Ragnorok
The Dark Tower

Probably missing a few...

According to me, yes. I am the person it's usually according to when I'm talking.

Alien Covenant will be pretty good from all accounts.

Damon Lindelof isn't involved this time, so there's hope.

Yeah, get Alien Covenant off that list haha. I can't wait for the trailer which is supposed to drop the end of this month. I'm Ghost in the Shell is great too. Controversy aside, the visuals and tone feel right on par with the animated feature. Even the way Scarlet delivers her lines was very reminiscent of the anime.

The problem is that it's gonna be a mess to distinguish which Alien movie is gonna be the Aliens sequel and which one is gonna be the Prometheus sequel.

Re: OT: Big Movies In 2017 That Will LIkely be Crap

If you start from a point of view that a film is "sure to disappoint," then you will probably go into the theatre expecting it to be bad. If you're an uber-fan and expect a film to do or say or be something it ultimately isn't, you will most likely be disappointed. If, however, you look at film on a sliding scale, where there are some movies that are very deep and say something meaningful and turn a mirror on society, while there are others that are there for fun and popcorn, you're probably going to go a bit easier on the "action" or "blockbuster" films. Starting with The Matrix Reloaded, I found that it is better to not try to anticipate or have expectations when going into a movie - you have a lot better time when you let it be what it is, rather than dislike it for the things you wanted and didn't get.

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

Oh yeah, forgot about Kong Skull Island. I hope it's at least good, but more than likely it'll be terrible.

Starting with The Matrix Reloaded, I found that it is better to not try to anticipate or have expectations when going into a movie - you have a lot better time when you let it be what it is, rather than dislike it for the things you wanted and didn't get.

EDIT:

This isn't to say that blockbuster films can't try to be deeper or say something more meaningful. Two reviled movies of recent years, Batman V Superman and Prometheus tried to do exactly that, to widen the perception of superhero stories and what super-god like beings would mean to a post 9/11 society, or to tackle the question of the origins of life on our planet, respectively - and I give them major kudos for the attempt even if in some viewers eyes they fell short. Inception is another example of a smart cinematic film that was also a blockbuster.

But most of the time, when I go to a movie that is IMAX worthy I don't expect much more than spectacle and grand visuals and as a student of film I allow that filmmaking is a primarily visual medium so that's what I look at first - can you get the same story with just what appears on screen. The point is, end of the day, if you have heightened expectations you're almost always going to be disappointed, but if you go in with mindset of letting the film be what it is, ultimately you're going to be more pleased with the outcome.

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.
