Movie Awards : Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Instead of asking which ones didn't deserve it. To me most of the "winners" are losers of the worst kind. So I'll pick out the few I think were actually good enough to win legitimately, chronologically. All the ones not listed you can surmise my opinion of them.

1939-Gone with the wind

1943-Casablanca

1945-Lost Weekend
1961-West Side Story
1965-The Sound of Music
1967-In the Heat of the Night
1968-Oliver!
1969-Midnight Cowboy

1972-The Godfather
1974-The Sting
1975- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1976-Rocky
1977-Annie Hall

1978–Deerhunter

1988-Rainman

And that's it for me!

Mean people suck.

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

I disagree with a couple of those. Mainly with Gone with the Wind which I felt was a chore.

What did you think should have won for 1993, the year Schindler's List won?

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Remains of the Day. I saw Schindler's List in theater, but my issues with it are many. One, Spielberg was not the right type of director for this type of film: I mean Jaws, ET, etc. I didn't like the script. Even though I like Liam Neeson & Ben Kingsley, I thought Ralph Fiennes was awful. Now War and Remembrance was a great WW2 film.

Mean people suck.

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

I realize that I am in the minority when I say this but I actually think that "AVATAR" should have Won BEST PICTURE over "THE HURT LOCKER".

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

I didn't like Hurt Locker, hence not on my list. Didn't really see Avatar.

Mean people suck.

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

1945 - The Lost Weekend – Very surprised it won, considering it's a dark movie about alcoholism. Ray Milland is great in this, I almost wanna see it for a third time.

1954 - On The Waterfront – This was in my Top 3 movies in my teenaged years. I actually went to the mall to buy it on VHS, and crashed my mom's car.. When I got home, I watched it back to back - something I've never done since.

1972 - The Godfather – This was another Top 3 of mine from the teen years. I was unsure of this, as I saw "Fat City" more recently, and probably enjoy it more, but it might be due to seeing "The Godfather" about a dozen times in those teen years.

1975 - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

1977 - Annie Hall, although I have a few movies rated exactly alike, with "Stroszek", "A Special Day", and "The Yellow Handkerchief"

1999 - American Beauty – the best movie that I saw within a year of its release. I actually turned down the opportunity to see this with an old friend IN the theater. I still have never seen a decent movie in a theater and never will.

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Good picks, except don't agree on American Beauty. Didn't like it even though I like Kevin Spacey. Yes, A Special Day and Stroszek are great.

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Oh yes Ms. Channing of course. Many would vie for Sunset Blvd, but there is something about Eve that I feel deserves to take the pip. That said, I have absolutely no qualms about Holliday's actress win for Born Yesterday.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

Sunset Blvd really was deserving of an Oscar too. Another year, I have a strong feeling it would have won.
Judy Holiday was a nice surprise.

I love you Adam 😢

Re: Best Picture Oscars that actually deserved it

The Oscars aren’t relevant anymore. It isn’t about the best movies and talent, it’s about something else - and so it’s ceased any relevance.
