Lists and Recommendations : Movie Recommendations For Me

Movie Recommendations For Me

I'm in desperate need of a great movie.. Every day I tell myself, "Watch a movie you haven't seen".. On the few occasions I have the will to watch, I see mostly duds.

I watch most of the movies I can from the 1930-70s, but I'm not looking for classics. I don't like "camp".. Most of what I watch is drama, dialogue driven - don't need action, or sci-fi.. Acting of course is important.

Here are the movies I've rated.. You can hit CTRL-F to quickly see if I've seen a certain movie or not

https://www.imdb.com/user/ur1182593/ratings?ref_=nv_usr_rt_4

Thanks - and feel free to ask me for recommendations!

Okay, MSF, I didn't go through your entire list so I'll throw some out there

Untamed Heart

And I've mentioned When They See Us here several times

Might mot be your cup of tea, but Apocalypto. It is an amazing movie.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

Bad Day at Black Rock.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

That is an impressive list. It is too long to go through. A good way to find something new is pick a director who has made a movie you enjoy and selecting another of theirs to watch.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

Thank you.

That's exactly what I do… I tried a handful of movies today, but I'm out of ideas, unfortunately, and I miss that wonderful feeling I can only get from a great movie (or music, comedy).

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

I've seen a LOT of those, including some of my favorites ever, BUT, I haven't seen "The Letter" (and I usually like Wyler), but I can't stand Bette Davis (or her owl eyes), but my question is, is it original? I'm kinda noired out.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

I think non-classics from the 1930-70s would serve me better… For example:

-Sult
-Fist in Pocket
-His Days Are Numbered
-Il Sorpasso
-Sign of the Leo

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

You have such great taste. I've seen most, especially your favorites, but I'll try to see if I can find any of these tomorrow.

De Sica's performance is so great in "Il Generale Della Rovere".. I HIGHLY recommend you (and everyone else) to check the documentary made on him entitled, "Vittorio D"

My problem is that I can't stream (the oldest, slowest laptop, along with my other one which is worse, but I use it to torrent download)… Then I put it on a thumb drive into this one, but if its an mkv or (most) mp4s, it is so choppy, even 720 (maybe unless its avi?)

However, I do have Amazon Prime (which I haven't paid for in over a year - there's a glitch in their system), and I just got another month of YouTube Premium (also for free)

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

I'd recommend watching anything from the Dardenne brothers, maybe with the exception of their last two films, The Unknown Girl and Young Ahmed as I didn't think they were as strong as their others.

Rosetta, La Promesse, and The Son are my favorite films by them.

LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

La Promesse was very good. I think I might have see "Un Fil", and another which I think was directed by them. A woman in a pink tank top who loses her job, going through trouble. Minimalist, dialogue-heavy.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

Two Days, One Night with Marion Cotillard. Yeah, that's also one of their best films.. I'd put it up there with the rest I've named. She got an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for that film, the first Belgium actress/actor to receive that.

If you thought La Promosse was very good, definitely watch Rosetta. Both are fantastic. The film actually helped form protective labour laws in Belgium, called 'Rosetta Law', prohibiting employers from paying teenagers less than minimum wage and other labour reforms involving young workers to avoid related exploitation. At Cannes, it won both the Palme d'or and the lead (Emilie Dequenne) won Best Actress, unanimously.

LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT.

Re: Movie Recommendations For Me

Edit: I saw this 4 years ago.

"Rosetta - 6.5/10

Decent movie.. Too similar to "Two Days, One Night" as well. Handheld camera was making me sick. For a short movie, there's a lot of time dedicated to nothing."
