Film Art and Cinematography : When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

I watched Let Me In and it starts like that. We see something happen and then the screen goes black and it says "Two Week Earlier" or something similar and takes us back to what should have been the start of the film and much later it finally catches up with the opening scene. That annoys me. It makes me feel like I am dawdling in the past waiting for the real action to start up again. It is the cinematic equivalent of being forced to eat your vegetables at supper.

Re: When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

Yeah I get what you mean. Sometimes it works but mostly it's annoying.

Re: When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

I have seen that sort of thing happen in a few movies but it usually doesn't bother me.

Carlito's Way was great the first time I saw it. Now so much any time after that.

I don't know, I think it can work on occasion.

Fallen (1998) is a good example of it adding to the story.

LOL. 🤡🌎

Re: When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

We should start a club. I hate it too.

Re: When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

I like it. It sets the tension up from the start.

Re: When a movie flashes back after the opening scene

It may or may not work depending on the film. It can take one out of the story, instead of just flowing linear like life flows and one becomes more aware they are watching a film, instead of getting immersed in it.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?
