When you aren't working or posting here…

Does anyone have an interesting side hustles, hobbies, activities?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I read autopsies. Well, I try to. Some of the words they use, they might as well be in chinese to me.

I draw

I clean

Cook

Read through police transcripts of suspects of unsolved murders lookong for clues, thinking I can somehow solve the case from my bedroom.

Oh, and I rabdonly play the clarinet when I'm bored.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

That last one is interesting. Is this you?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Damn, you caught me. I thought the hat was a good disguise!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

You play well!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Thanks 😁

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

When you say cook, do you mean to live or do you mean like amateur chef gourmet cooking?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Just normal cooking although I could give gordon ramsey a run for his money. I'm a better baker than a cook tho.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Right on. Any specialities?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

You're one of the most interesting people here

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

That one is pretty interesting

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I wouldn't call it particularly interesting, but I coach softball. Not this year because of Covid but I have been doing it since 2008.

I also like to read books and research online about the Dyatlov Pass Incident. I am fascinated.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Do you coach rec league/youth league or do you coach for a school?

I'm not familiar with that incident but I quickly googled it - it does look interesting!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I used to play. Then I started coaching rec when my oldest daughter was 6 years old. I coached her in rec until she was 15. I coached my younger daughter in rec and then in club ball because she was really talented and wanted to play competitively. I'm a pretty modest person, but one of my only brags is how good of a softball coach I am. I love doing it and I am very good at bringing out the best in every player. I've made good softball players out of kids other coaches gave up on. I wish I had a more lucrative talent
I injured my thumb in the fall of 2019 catching for my younger daughter. She's a very powerful pitcher. (I also ended up with stitches in my face the one damn time I caught for her without wearing a mask.) I wore a brace on my hand for a few months and the thumb was better. Our 2020 season was canceled. Hopefully, I can get back to coaching this spring. My thumb pain came back with a vengeance recently. I am seeing a specialist this week. I worry I won't be an effective coach if I can't use my left hand
As for school ball, my older daughter's high school asked me to step in when her coach was fired. I said no because my daughter had gotten to that age where she was arguing with me constantly and I felt that coaching her at school would damage our relationship further. Turned out to be a huge regret of mine, because the new coach sucked coaching-wise and personality-wise which ruined my daughter's high school softball experience. There's a new coach now and I am hopeful that my younger daughter will have a better experience.

I had never heard of the Dyatlov Pass until two years ago. I read a brief summary in a buzzfeed article and quickly went down the rabbit hole. I've been there ever since! I do not believe in the Yeti or alien theories, etc. I think most of what happened to the hikers after they left their tent has been figured out. But why did they leave their tent in the first place?! And they cut themselves out of their tent instead of taking the time to unbutton. Why?!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

My stepbrother coached select softball for his daughters and loved it. A good friend of mine from HS is a HS softball coach and he too absolutely loves it. It's a fun sport to watch and I am honest enough with myself to know that if I stepped into the box right now, I'm striking out in 3 pitches! LOL

That's really great. I coached youth basketball and flag football all the way until cancellations last spring. My youngest will be in 7th grade next fall so my "coaching career" is at its end. It was a wonderful experience so I can relate to you completely about this.

Good luck with the specialist! Hopefully it's just physical therapy.

That sounds like a true mystery and a fun one to speculate on. That is a great question because cutting out implies a frantic escape.

Dyatlov Pass Incident

Same here! Do you know the YT channel 'Bedtime Stories'? They've made several videos about the incident. Weird stuff!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I watch Bedtime Stories all the time! Great channel.

However, this is probably the best incident on the video. I feel this dude's theory is probably pretty much what actually happened.

Yes! I love their videos about it!

If you like that sorta thing Penny @Lina you would probably also find the Missing 411 cases, by David Paulides, to be fascinating as well. Really weird stuff. Strange disappearances, like a person walking along a trail, with others before and aft, then suddenly they take a corner and are out of sight for a mere second, and they’re gone! Never to be seen again! Often in rough terrain, that it would be very difficult for an abductor to get away quickly.

Here are a few of the more prominent cases. Both in the Smoky Mountain National Forest, in this instance.

I meant to respond to this back then. This sounds fascinating! I am going to check this mystery out.

David Paulides will be a guest on the late night AM radio program, coast to coast am, if you wish to check it out Penny. It’s on Thursday March 4th, and he’ll be on in the first half (10PM western pacific time)

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

You know what? I will be driving my daughter back to college on the east coast that day, cross country roadtrip. I wonder if I can pick that up on my car radio. It would be great to listen to something interesting while driving.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Probably Penny. I listened to it for years on the AM radio, prior to Tunein. There are tons of affiliate stations that carry the show. A lot of newer cars have Sirius/XM, and it used to be on the Road Dog trucking channel (100 I believe)

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Cool! I did that for 19 years! The coaching thing, not the reading thing.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Mostly doing stuff with the kiddos. I like gardening, doing home diy junk, and normal human things like watching tv and reading. But I'm working on finding a side hustle!!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Those kiddos take a lot of time but it's worth it.

I'm doing a garden this year. What do you grow in yours?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Yes! And it's fun. They're getting older so I'm trying to get them more into my hobbies. That way you get kid time and hobby time. Win win! Lol

Right now we've got japanese eggplant and some lettuces. But we have some really big pomegranate bushes, a bunch of grapes, and we planted an apple tree but it is small and shitty. We've got a bunch of citrus too. It does well in the heat. I started a few tinier plants but our chickens keep eating them!

What are you planning on growing?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Not sure yet but I know tomatoes and okra are already on the list. Probably zucchini and yellow squash. Carrots, onions perhaps? I thought about pumpkins but they drink a lotta water.

I considered a fruit tree but my backyard is pretty small so I'll probably do a couple of pines instead and hang a hammock inbetween lol

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Oh, pumpkins would be so fun! That sounds like a nice yummy list though!

Lol you've got the right idea. A fruit tree might feed your tummy but a hammock will feed your soul.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Yes ma'am! One of my big 2021 goals is to redo my backyard entirely.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

That's really cool! I love those projects

As much as I appreciate a good porn on occasion, it is no substitute.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I add lots of data to the IMDb and identify various folks in films and TV shows for the website Movie Dude's Pictorial Filmography of Screen Actors.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

That sounds like a passion for film. Nice

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Outstanding!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

be on Facebook, hang with my bae, listen to music (which i also do while i post here, so it doesnt really count?), watch movies and binge tv shows, read, study (it's my last 2 semesters in uni), overthink things, get stoned/high with my roomie (or alone), be a boring homely normie

suck it.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Did you really type "bae?" Tsk-tsk!

Sounds like a collegiate life to me. Two semester left eh? Mind if I ask what your degree will be in?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Been golfing a lot lately and playing video games

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I imagine by now your game is probably fairly decent. What's your handicap?

You and the Pops coming stateside again soon?

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Considerably better. Used to shoot over 100, now I’m low 90s and my swing has gotten more consistent with less errors. Plus I’m having a ton more fun playing now that I know what I’m doing.

No trip planned anytime soon. Maybe this winter though, not sure where though!

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

Toledo, OH 😀

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

I smell a convention…

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

It would be a different kind of convention though. CMG is long dead

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

My wife and I have both gotten into chess since we binged through The Queens Gambit when isolating. So that's our current hobby which we'll probably abandon in a few months when we get inevitably get bored of it.

Re: When you aren't working or posting here…

yeah right

suck it.
