The Watercooler : Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

A few weeks ago I had a dream a bearded maniac came into my house and was about to strangle me as I slept. I woke up screaming and swinging my arms out defensively as if to protect myself from an attacker. It felt as though the killer was hovering right above me and then suddenly just disappeared in a puff smoke. It really freaked me out.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Yes.
Lately?
A lot.

That is what my husband says.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Sorry to hear that. Is it related to COVID? I started having nightmares frequently since the lockdown began. Can you believe that was over six months ago?

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

I do think it has a little to do with everything that's going on in this world right now.
I try to be calm, but as you and everyone else knows, it's not easy these days.
He wakes me up some nights too. We have never had such terrible dreams until recently.

Sorry, MissMargo, you must have very vivid dreams

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Some are vivid. Some, I can't remember, but I know that I'm relieved to wake up.
I'm aware of calling out in my dreams, but it's weird when I come to the surface, and my husband is sitting up and looking at me as if I have lost my mind. It's a bit unsettling for both of us.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

I don't know. I do know that I had far more stress during the years I worked and raised a teenager than I have on a daily basis now.
I do know one thing. I'm worried about the future and what is going on in this world these days. Until about a year ago, I didn't have a care in the world.
How do you handle it?

My mom keeps me distracted. I'm in my own little bubble

Hope you can de-stress and feel better soon

Wow! That's never happened to me but I've dreamt about trying to wake up and get out of bed and I couldn't

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

I have that one too, feelings of being unable to move.

My heart bleeds for him, as a child. Someone took a kid and manufactured a monster. At the same time, as an adult, he's irredeemable.

Sleep paralysis is pretty weird feeling for sure.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

A gasp or jolt but not a scream.

I had a dream a big spider bit me on the neck as I walked in a cob web accidentally and instantly woke up with a neck spasm and thought maybe something really did bite me in my sleep, but found nothing there.

I've had dreams where I'm about to be killed but always wake up before it happens…but it's rare that I have such dreams.

I had the weirdest dream recently that I killed someone who was hiding in a plastic garbage bag…and I stomped them to death…lol

I don't know why but I associated that person with a poster here…and oddly, that person hasn't posted in a long while now

Are you okay?

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Don't worry. I won't tell Itty you dreamed about stomping him to death.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

lol

It wasn't him though…someone else..and I've been wondering why that person hasn't posted in awhile…that might be the reason they came to mind but I have no clue why I'd want to kill them…lol

I don't think I ever killed anyone in my sleep before.

I have been getting on odd sleeping patterns recently though…it might have something to do with the weird dreams.

Are you okay?

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Do you have a beard? Maybe it was strangling you in your sleep and you are the maniac?!

I don't recall waking up like that but i wake up a lot because i feel like I'm falling.

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Okay this actually gets weirder.

The next day when I was walking my dog, there was a bearded stranger standing out in front of the liquor store I go by every day. At first it didn't click in my mind but then I noticed him sort of stumbling up behind me as I walked. I just kept telling myself "its not real. That was just a dream. Its not real…."

So I sort of stopped and stepped off to the side to let him pass. My back was facing him the whole time but I could see his crooked shadow slowly coming upon me step by step. I thought about him stabbing me or strangling me from behind like in the dream. But I just stood frozen watching his shadow jerkily inch his way closer and closer. I knew my dog would attack him if he tried to hurt me and I prepared myself to possibly fight for my life like in the dream.

Finally he passed.

It was indeed a bearded homeless guy wearing a dirty flannel shirt. He lumbered past me walking along the curb with his head hanging down. I assumed he was looking to find spare change in the gutter or something. But he kind of stepped up high on the curb with one foot and then stepped down to street level with his other foot. It created this creepy, jerky movement as the stepped up and down on the curb.

I stood there and watched him continue in his lopsided walk as he stared down into the gutter and continued down the street. It was an odd coincidence to say the least.

I never put much belief in dreams and what not but I've had several incidents that really do make me wonder sometimes…

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

Dude, lock your door. I'm pretty sure you're living in a horror movie.

Isn't that how the horror movies go? First a dream, then a false scare, and then…well. Hopefully nothing.

But if you're not here tomorrow we'll know why

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

On dreams of being attacked, this meaning came up in a quick search -

According to some experts, when someone is asleep, the brain is still very much active hence why dreams occur. The dormant parts when we are awake are now functioning. However, it works slightly differently when the rest of our body is resting. Instead of thinking literally, we think symbolically—the reason why dreams are sometimes referred to as visions of the future, a sign in different aspects of life, or a message from our subconscious we should be aware of.

One of the most common types of dreams we usually have is when we’re being attacked or when someone beat you up either by monsters, dogs, someone who we’re close with, etc. and admit it, it’s pretty scary. But no worries, because just like what we mentioned above, these attacks in dreams don’t mean it’s literally happening to you but rather they are just symbolic messages on the current situation of your life.

Some also say that these attacks occurring in our dreams are interpretations of how we handle our life. You may think that you are in control of everything, but deep inside, your vulnerability is just there waiting to be triggered. And your dreams of you being attacked are raging wars between you and yourself.

For my dream -

To dream about killing someone or being killed by someone signifies that your unconscious is trying to kill off or get rid of an unnecessary or unpleasant aspect of yourself. Maybe you keep denying that there's something that you need to change in yourself.

In most cases dreams about violence symbolize that something has been out of control in the dreamer's life. These dreams may also symbolize your repressed anger, your fears and worries. Sometimes these dreams can mean that your love situation is not very good.

Someone told me it's due to guilt over something I said about that person and I'm now putting the blame on myself because the person isn't around…which makes sense.

And maybe I'm worried subconsciously that something bad happened to him.

Are you okay?

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

What are you going to do to resolve it?

Re: Have you ever awoken screaming from a nightmare?

I have a lot of dreams where I'm fighting but i can't hurt the person. Either I'm hitting really slowly or my hands are really heavy.

To dream that you are unable to throw a punch indicates that you are feeling helpless. You may have self-esteem and confidence issues.

that's enough introspection for me
