Why are television shows just 10-12 episodes per season, instead of 22-24?

Back in the 60s to 00s, that’s how it used to be.

Tighter storylines…less filler and waste πŸ˜‰πŸ‘

And to save money as production costs have since risen.

ARE you British? In America MOST shows TODAY are between 22-5 episodes (24 average) PER season. Here in America during the 50s and 60s it was between 30-40 (36 was the average).

Basically, two reasons: to save money and less filler, meaning tighter storyline. Most recent shows would start with 10 to 13 episodes as a "trial" to see if it's worthy enough to stay based on viewership and ratings. Some companies wasted too much money on some shows only to get suddenly canceled. Another reason is that some shows have high production value/cost meaning good CGI and locations (among other things) so it can take a while to finish them. For example, Game of Thrones have ten episodes (except the final two seasons) and they take nearly a year to finish per seasons. And yet despite of only ten episodes, they have quite immersive storyline without any unnecessary fillers.

Premium channels like HBO and Showtime usually have fewer episodes with longer episode length (without commercials) while most basic channels have higher counts of episodes but with commercials so it depends on the channel and shows.

Long story short: less is more. Plus have you seen Netflix original shows?

Edit: However, if you have seen any British shows like Misfit, many have fewer episodes, which shocked me at first, but I understood why. Most look great.
