Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

You're welcome and thanks for the compliment. There's some really good ones on your list… I'll have to check back tomorrow and see - I need to watch a movie; it's been a while, and there are a few handfuls I haven't seen.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

Mort, you have to be the most prolific consumer of film I've ever seen. Well done, man.

My list:
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
The Swimmer (1968)
Stoker (2013)
Fido (2006)
Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
M. Butterfly (1993)
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1941)
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1977)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
Design for Living (1933)
The Lighthouse (2019)

Then the renewed earth would reclaim city and town, leaving only Ghost Dancers and those who lived by nature’s laws.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

Thank you so much for the compliment! I haven't been consuming anything the last few years – out of movies to watch, despite having 1,500 in my IMDB watch-list. A big part of it are the distractions in life, not being able to find subtitles, or the movie itself. And many times I turn it off within 15-20 minutes (when in the past, I would watch ANY movie all the way through). The internet is a hue distraction for me (and other video and audio, not to mention, text from message boards/chat).

"The Swimmer" is one of my favorite movies. I keep hearing about "Design For Living" - I'll do an automatic record of the director. Thanks!

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

Another Earth is an amazing movie.
On the night of the discovery of a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

It's the same filmmaker who made I Origins, which I included on my list, a very solid film. If you liked another earth I recommend it.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

Thanks! 👍🏼

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

You're very welcome, please come back and let me know what you thought of it because it'd be a really good movie to go into blind and I'd love to hear from someone who did.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

I liked it a lot, although not quite as much as Another Earth. Maybe it's because the idea of reincarnation is quite acceptable to me and so I felt a lot of the soul searching etc was superfluous. The eye connection was cool though, and definitely different. Thanks for suggesting it to me. It was a really worthwhile and interesting movie.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

You're welcome, I haven't actually seen another earth but I plan on it and have been looking to see it ever since seeing I origins. Another film I really liked with a somewhat similar vibe is "sound of my voice" it's about some non believers infiltrating a religious cult lead by an enigmatic girl who claim's to be from the future. If you haven't seen that maybe that's one you'll enjoy too, don't know.

If you like all dialogue driven films like My dinner with Andre or 12 angry men, then you might like the Sci-Fi the man from earth, about a college professor who claims to be a 40'000 year old immortal. Consider those two more recommendations if you know of any similar films to another earth or I origins I would love to know about them.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

I absolutely love Man From Earth! If I think of any more similar films, I'll post them here.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

I think I might qualify pretty much every Studio Ghibli film. Yes, they’re huge in Japan, but most people in the states likely aren’t aware of them. I’d probably single out Ponyo, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky as the best of the bunch.

I’d also go with:
A Simple Plan. Not exactly great, but it’s a really solid movie and has probably my favorite Billy Bob Thornton performance. It’s also nice to see Raimi going with a less flashy and more grounded approach to story telling.

Under the Skin. Definitely one of the best sci-fi films of the last twenty years.

Ip Man. Excellent fight scenes and Donnie Yen at the height of his powers.

Bronson. Tom Hardy was just fuckin aces in this one.

Brawl in Cell Block 99. Vince Vaughn is pretty great in this, and the violence is just fucking brutal. It’s a great movie to watch at like midnight with your mates.

Good Time. The Safdie brothers are just excellent directors of anxiety driven thrillers, and I’d say they probably have the best grasp of natural dialogue any writers have ever had. All Robert Pattinson is excellent in this.

Re: Great Movies That Are Not Well-Known

7 of them are Oscar winners for fucks sake. So of course they are well known.

The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.
