TV General : Les Miserables (2018)

Les Miserables (2018)

I just came across this new-ish adaptation that originally aired on PBS' Masterpiece Theater. I wasn't sure if it would hold my attention after having seen many different versions already, including the stage and film musicals, the movie starring Liam Neesom as well as at least one other TV mini series.

But after having viewed the first episode of this six part series I was reminded why the story has endured for so long and in so many different forms. It plays as the ultimate human drama full of love, loss, agony and redemption. Stars Dominic West and Lily Collins captivate as the story draws you in, probably not for the first time or the last. Don't expect another musical version, however. This serialized drama proves Victor Hugo's classic doesn't need song and dance to hold your attention. The story itself stands well enough on its own.

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

It seems the mods have misplaced this thread.

If they can read, they would know this adaptation is not a musical and should not be categorized as such.

And you, monsieur Show Tune Singing Faggot, would know your presence in this thread is likewise irrelevant.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

I adore Les Miz! It's just fabulous. And I never said this was a musical. Irrelevant?

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

The thread’s in TV General now.

The story is rightfully a classic and this is a good adaptation but at least one person on YouTube seemed to think this was an adaptation of the musical with the songs taken out.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

I've gotten through three episodes and would probably keep going except I need to get some sleep lol

I'm really enjoying it and am impressed by the diversity of casting. This adaptation seems to give fuller back story and explore aspects that are frequently ignored or curtailed in the more well known versions. I think it plays better in a multi-episode series like this especially given the vastness of the source material.

So far, I just like the 10th anniversary. Everyone was in check.

I'm watching this tonight.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

How do you like it so far?

I just have one more episode left. Episodes 3 and 4 are really good. I think this is one of the best adaptations. Another good one is the French one starring Geopard Depardieu and John Malkovitch. It's also a six part mini-series.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

I have zero interest in this. I'm simply not interested in something that has a "diverse cast" for no good reason. I'm pretty sure I was excited to hear about this before but lost it when I originally saw the trailer and then quickly forgot all about it. Now that i've seen the trailer again it just reaffirms my desire to never see this.

Javert as a gay black man is supremely ridiculous.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

It was actually really good, one of the better adaptations. It fills in a lot of the blanks and takes its time to tell the whole story so it feels very complete by the end.

And watching the black guy was way better than having to hear Russell Crowe's singing.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

Although the casting of David Oyelowo can be seen as just another part of the trend of casting non-white actors in historically white roles I thought it interesting that he played the villainous role (same with Adeel Akhtar playing Thénardier). My only real issue with David Oyelowo is that I have to copy and paste his surname.

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

Wait, wtf is that black guy doing there?

Re: Les Miserables (2018)

The casting gets even more diverse with characters such as Eponine and Gavroche. I like it. The actress who plays Eponine strangely fits the role quite well.
