Directors : Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

I'm sure I'll think of more but one I read was how John cassavetes demanded that Seymour Cassel being the lead role in one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

ok but how is that a "big and costly mistake"?

if u stare long enough at this post u die

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Because "Cuckoo's Nest" is one of the greatest movies. Cassavetes and Nicholson plus a great script. It would have probably helped John fund more of his movies - he didn't make that many because he refused to compromise.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

I read that the director of Babylon, AD didn't appreciate the lack of directorial freedom that came with making a Hollywood film. Of course, same goes for David Lynch clashing with the producers on Dune.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

I've seen most of his movies, but never saw "Dune" (a friend said I'd probably hate it, anyway, lol)

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Michael Cimino going way over schedule and overbudget on Heaven's Gate. The box office failure of that film nearly sank the studio that made and released it.

You've seen Guy Standeven in something since the man was in everything.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Does John Landis count? His mistake (reckless disregard) on Twilight Zone: The Movie cost some lives…

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

I had the feeling that somebody was going to name Landis I was about to say it myself.
Oh. and yes. He definitely counts.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

So horrific…

John Landis

Unbelievably horrific. A friend of mine was on the set the day of that awful catastrophe and when Landis was warned that the plane was flying too low in rehearsals he said, "You ain't seen nothin' yet!"

I never watched another Landis film after that.

John Landis

Absolutely. Even his attitude in the hearings was cavalier.

At one time or another, probably all of them.

Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 😼

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

I think Ed Wood Jr avoided that fate by never making a big or expensive film.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Yes he did! Great point!

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Elaine May with Ishtar. A massive box office and critical failure that put the kibosh on May's directing career and she only went on to write two more films in the wake of Ishtar's poor reception with critics and audiences alike.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

Wolfgang Petersen with Poseidon. The dismal domestic box office performance of and mixed critical response for this expensive remake of The Poseidon Adventure killed Petersen's career as an A-list director in Hollywood. He didn't direct another movie until ten years later and that was some modest comedy made in Germany.

Re: Directors who made big or costly mistakes?

In Back to the Future Part 2, Crispin Glover wasn't happy with the money offer so he decline to take part, and Robert Zemeckis decided to use make up to give another actor his likeness. Crispin sued, won, and they had to pay him more than 5 times the offer he turned down and he wasn't even in the movie. It also created new rules for how Hollywood can't use someone's face without their permission.
