Health & Fitness : To fellow mask wearers

To fellow mask wearers

Do you wear the disposable masks, or are you wearing the fabric masks that you wash?

Also, are you wearing the ones with the filter?

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I wear both types, no filter.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

The filtered ones are expensive,
the disposable are a waste. I use a fabric one, and spray it at day's end with OxyClean.

It's time to start winding this thing down.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I have reusable cloth masks I bought at my supermarket. They have a pocket for a filter but I haven’t added one.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

What I like about the cloth ones is they contact the whole face.

I wear the disposable ones when I'm going to be doing a quick in and out somewhere. But if I'm going to be around people for an extended period of time or where I cannot social distance, I always, always wear a fabric mask. I do use one with a carbon filter. They're actually pretty inexpensive.

Are you worried about spreading the virus?

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I don't wear a mask! This morning I woke up on a free country and tonight I'm want to die in a free country if that's my fate!

Also…those things don't fit my obscenely large chin

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I wear an N95. We have quite a few of them thanks to my mother-in-law.

Can….Can your mother-in-law ship some to me?

Kidding. As Lilith said, you're fortunate to have some. They're not easy to come by nowadays.

Some are designed to look fashionable but in the end they’re as fashionable as a seatbelt.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Nah, they're worn out and about in public. Women are matching them to their outfits now. It's become fashion. No one cares what a seat belt looks like.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

That fits in with my reply. If you have to wear them while walking around and you have money to waste then you colour coordinate but the masks themselves are not yet fashion statements.

If they are then this happened before the pandemic with cyclists wearing patterned face coverings.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I was looking at those, but I wondered how do you clean them?

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Perhaps they get dry cleaned. There are also those creepy skull face masks popular with many male bike riders. Perhaps it makes them feel like hells angels as they peddle through the streets.

Still supports what I said, wearing a mask isn’t a fashion statement but what you do with them can be a fashion statement.

Especially if you want to look expensively stupid.

Meanwhile you can get your seatbelt to match your clothing…

Re: To fellow mask wearers

The masks my sister sewed for me are definitely a fashion statement tho! I wear them with pride because they are unicums and no one else wears them but me!

My sister is also a designer, by the way. Those masks are part of her fashion. And I'm setting the statement when I wear them!

I said that when I walk into a bank (or anywhere) these days, I have this strange desire to say "Give me all your money!" With everyone wearing a mask, I'm amazed that we haven't had a rash of bank robberies.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

I have a better question: Is it acceptable to go to places wearing burglar mask? Or Michael Myers's mask or the hockey mask Jason Voorhees wear?

On a serious note (I think. ), I wear a fabric one. It's comfortable. Then again, it's now mandatory to wear it in public here in Alabama starting today at 5 pm after continuous whining from the doctors pressuring the governor to make it mandatory. I understand why, though. Oh, well.

I'm considering getting the N95 masks but I wish it's not expensive. And not hard to get it. Even Amazon is out of stock for now, but there are cheaper ones available that are probably not as effective as N95 but at least you'd probably breathe easier.

There is one problem: Do you recall I told you that I'm deaf? Communication would be a problem.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

You can't read lips if they are covered. Can you speak?

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Yes, I can speak. I would have use ASL but I haven't done it since middle school and not many people around here know of it. Lip reading, even with hearing aid on, is the main source of communication. Plus, I'm terrible with phone call. And some people won't pull the mask down to communicate with me so they had to repeat the sentence multiple times. It's annoying.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Were you born deaf?

Re: To fellow mask wearers

No. I suffered from the severe ear infection when I was still a toddler and it destroyed my hearing. I can still hear a little on the left ear, just muffled. What's perplexing me is that I had it for nearly six months. I don't know if the medical information was advanced enough to treat it back in early 90s or it's treatable, but didn't get treatment until later on while I suffered for months with it. If it's the latter, then it wasn't right. My mother told me I had a "bad and old" doctor who should have retired already. To me, it sounds like a bullshit excuse.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

There are masks like this where you can see the mouth.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

While I'm glad that exist, unfortunately not many people wear it. In fact, I haven't seen anyone wear that except maybe the audiologist and speech therapist. Maybe that would take time. Perhaps the university probably have some as the university I attend has ASL club.

But when I saw that, I thought, what if that fogs up and you can't see the mouth? *chuckles nervously*

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Hahaha! That's a good question. I wonder if you could get away with wearing a Jason Voorhees mask or burglar mask. It's a mask, after all!

The fabric ones are generally more comfortable, but you bring up a good point about reading lips. If you and I were IRL friends, I'd totally learn ASL so we could communicate together, or get some of those masks that were clear so you could read lips.

My best friend in grade school was deaf, and that's when I learned/practiced ASL but it was only from a book. Not as good as taking classes, but we were just kids, and it was the best I could do back then to communicate with her.

I've been wanting to learn ASL again anyway!

You're the 2nd person I've encountered who had ear infections as a toddler and it resulted in deafness. The other person I know spent a lot of his childhood with tubes in his ears and was in and out of the hospital as well as the doctor's office, always in such pain.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Nice. I'll be ordering the burglar stuff back.

If you and I were IRL friends, I'd totally learn ASL so we could communicate together, or get some of those masks that were clear so you could read lips.

I would love that. Imagine the people wondering what the hell we're saying when we're actually insulting them. Kidding (not really), but the mask that make the lips visible do exist, as the poster posted above, but not many people around here wear that except probably schools/universities and those who specializes in hearing loss like doctors at certain clinics and audiology. I imagine the mask with lips visible would be useful, indeed. As I said in one of my posts, I haven't done any ASL since middle school so I might have to learn them again. *sighs* Even if it's for a while, but like I said, not many people around here know them so either lip reading or scribbling on papers for me to read are the only options around here. Even if the mask policy is temporary.

I think I remember you told me you know someone who is deaf before. Is she doing well? And did I mention that the university I'm attending has ASL club? I've considered joining that club, but job and (now) virus happened.

You're the 2nd person I've encountered who had ear infections as a toddler and it resulted in deafness. The other person I know spent a lot of his childhood with tubes in his ears and was in and out of the hospital as well as the doctor's office, always in such pain.

Jesus. I know my situation was rough, but his sounds worse. The medicinal method they used is different from what I went through. I can't remember how I recovered from it, but I know I did get shots and it took me a while to heal from it. Then I started seeing audiologist and started attending classes with students with special needs. I imagine he went through the same.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Yep! Good memory. I spoke before about having a friend who was deaf. This was when I was in grade school, and I had never met anyone who was deaf before. She could read lips and would augment with ASL. I asked my mother to pick up a book on ASL for me so I could learn to communicate with her, but as a little kid trying to learn from diagrams, mostly it was the alphabet, spelling things out a letter at a time. There were a few words or phrases I learned along the way.

Things weren't like they are now where you can hop on youtube and watch a tutorial. I was trying to teach myself ASL using cartoon-like images, and then try them out with my friend at school. I have a feeling when I "spoke" to her, I probably "sounded" drunk! lol

As far as my friend with the ear infections, that also ran in his family. It happened with his brothers as well, but not as severe. His mother said he was always in such horrible pain. Now as an adult, he's extremely hard of hearing, and generally has to always have the volume blasting in whatever he's listening to.

I think you're right about the masks (with the clear shields) - they'd be helpful in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and probably also working with kids who might also be frightened of masks.

Just in general, I would really enjoy learning ASL. It would make it even more fun to have someone else to practice with! A friend and I were talking about taking classes together but then, you know, this whole virus thing happened…

Re: To fellow mask wearers

That's what I started with. I start with letters so it would take a while for me spell out the long word. While learning letters and words are kinda easy, doing the ASL based on words and letters as well as numbers is tricky and it takes practice. I remember one preschool teacher did horrible at ASL it confused me as well as other people and my family. I went, "Uhm…..no, miss. This is how you do it." and I was about six or seven at that time and I taught the 45 years old woman a few things.

I still have the ASL book back when I was a little boy with pictures and instructions as how to do it. Growing up until I was in 11th grade, I've always had speech therapists and ASL interpreter working with me in classes. I'm glad you are able to communicate with her and stay friends with her because you know us deaf people are seen as outsiders (from "normal" people's perspective….basically bullies and shallow/selfish assholes) who want to have friends. Same with those with cerebral palsy/quadriplegia and other disabilities, though they have much harder time than me and I can't imagine what they're going through. I talked to them sometimes and they were nice lots.

As far as my friend with the ear infections, that also ran in his family. It happened with his brothers as well, but not as severe. His mother said he was always in such horrible pain. Jeez. Talk about being doomed to become deaf later since birth. He's not the only one with the high volume, though.

I think you're right about the masks (with the clear shields) - they'd be helpful in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and probably also working with kids who might also be frightened of masks.

Well, I wouldn't mind wearing the mask if I hadn't been deaf and I wouldn't care either way but yes, masks affect communication between me and the person who wear the mask. That is my main concern. I'd rather avoid people with masks on unless if they understand that I'm deaf and they're able to communicate with me effectively instead of bitch about it like paranoid nutjob with germaphobia. If they don't want to pull the mask down to reveal their lips, they can simply write it down on the note pad, that is if they don't know any ASL. Usually, some jobs require for you to have basic knowledge of ASL.

Just in general, I would really enjoy learning ASL. It would make it even more fun to have someone else to practice with! A friend and I were talking about taking classes together but then, you know, this whole virus thing happened…

I agree. ASL is fun. It's like encrypted messages in the other thread, but with our hands.

Re: To fellow mask wearers

Wow, she's excellent. I love her. I had never heard of her before. That was a great story about her on Howard Stern's show, and heart breaking (yet inspiring) about the woman in the wheelchair (with the Laverne laugh).

She's got an incredible attitude. Plus, she had cancer, twice? And was paralyzed? Damn, she's so positive and so funny and I love how she also signs while she's speaking.

Did you catch her "Good morning"? lol

Re: To fellow mask wearers

That's what I love about her. She went through so much and yet, stayed positive and inspiring. That's what makes her a strong woman.

Oh, yes. Her "good morning" posture is hilarious. That's my favorite bit. She insulted her family unintentionally. When I was a kid, I called the middle finger, "Fuck finger" in front of everyone at the dinner table and well…..you could say, I spent the rest of the night shut in bedroom, video game and tv taken away. 😅 I'm also responsible for other kids repeated what I said as well. Whoops!

Imagine telling someone good morning when in fact you're secretly insulting them. Hmm….I'm gonna find someone on this board and tell him or her "Good morning". Look out for that!
