Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

If so, please describe. I notice I'm constantly doing this - fantasizing, inserting myself with a character, or as an observer, sometimes arranging things to modernize the movie, or to "make it better".. Assisting from my couch to the screen, back to my couch, and into my life as I walk out.

I'll find myself noticing ways that they should have done it better, or notice mistakes in cuts, or where they might have done better exposition…things like that.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

Yes. a couple of movie scenes come to mind.

I can't help thinking that this scene might have been funnier, had I'm Mr. Blue continued playing throughout the crazy OMG part instead of abruptly changing to that action music.

Here is another scene that I wish had been done differently.
If there was ever a scene ripe for a jump scare, this would have been it.
Why did we, the audience, have to see Jack behind her?
It would have been more fun, had we all jumped with Wendy…

I just saw "The Shining" clips and I agree 100%. It's a horror movie, and it would have been perfect for him to enter the scene while she was reading it. For a second, there was this black shadow, and I thought "That would have been perfect".

Have you ever made a movie, or at least wanted to make a movie?

As for wanting to ever make a movie, I'm great at coming up with ideas. It takes me a week just to arrange and then rearrange some bookshelves to my satisfaction.
I'm an armchair critic. 😊

You could be the next Stanley Kubrick.

Coming up with ideas is the perfect start. You can make it into whatever you want. If you don't know too many people who would participate, use a few characters, even one as an exercise, even if its simply to learn how to edit. "Windows Movie Maker" is a very easy program.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

Are you into film making?
It is fun to think about what would have made a scene work better, but that is usually after I am annoyed by how the film makers bungled a scene and missed a great opportunity to make it so much better.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

Just amateur stuff… I once tried to make a movie of a published work of mine, but people are not dependable.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

Our son took some film classes years ago. He and some of his friends made an extremely low budget horror film. He cowrote and directed it. I even had a small part where I was sitting in a dark room watching TV when I get stabbed in the back through the chair. The movie wasn't great by any means, but it was a good learning experience. One thing my son learned is that when collaborating with others, the original idea very rarely matches up with the end result.

Yes, its good exercise not only in terms of film technicalities, but how to get the entire thing organized, as well as knowing ahead of time (if he decides to do it again) what kind of problems he might face. I'm VERY interested in the disparity between original idea vs. end result. Was this because of the actors abilities, suggestions, or your son wanting to change things as he went along? Also, was he happy with the changes? Did he put it up on YouTube or any other site? I'd like to see it :)

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

They all seemed to be organized in the beginning. They did have a plan… Story boards… This was made in the mid 90s. No computer… No YouTube.
New ideas seeped in. 😊
He has no plans to make another film. I am happy to report that all are still the best of friends.
All great men and women with other ambitions these days. All creative in other ways.
We did all get together a few years ago on Halloween to take a look at the movie they made.
We screened it at our house. It was the first time my husband saw it.
As far as everyone involved is concerned, it's a hit… As a comedy! 🤣

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

I hope they have saved many companies! It wouldn't be a bad idea to convert it onto a computer movie file, so it can be protected forever. Tapes go bad, tapes go missing - I'm missing a few myself.

Its good they are still friends :)

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

You are probably right. I'll have to remember to ask him about it…
One of them have possibly already thought of it.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

I’d love to be able to edit out all the flashback scenes from Vanishing Point.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

What a coincidence. I started doing that same thing a few months ago! I knew that I was finally at the verge of thinking like a Hollywood film director. I don't imagine myself as the characters. I've only imagine what I would do to modernize the film. When I watch actors play their role,I think about what other movie genres or types of characters I'd like to see that actor become or what other actors would make the perfect collaboration with them. I sometimes think about how certain film director would have done with a specific movie.

I can't think of examples because I'm not in that frame of mind right now. Right now I'm relaxing my brain.

Re: Do You Ever Edit A Film In Your Head While Watching?

I'm one of those people who gets totally absorbed in a movie and never thinks of any of the technical stuff. I just wallow in the moment and forget real life.
