Woman fired for calling police

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/hampton-inn-employee-fired-for-calling-police-on-black-guest-at-pool-with-her-children/ar-BB16awV2?ocid=spartanntp

You'd have to read the article, but hear the story out. The woman claims it's racist because a white woman there with her kids didn't have the cops called on her. However, the situation was the white woman was at the pool with her kids. The black woman was sitting her car in the parking lot while her children were in the pool, unattended, and the woman refused to identify herself.

Regardless of race, doesn't that behaviour in and of itself raise questions? Those children had no one to watch over them if they were in danger. So someone from the hotel called the police because it wasn't obvious if a registered guest was really there.

The cops came and she refused to show the cops her identification (this is what I mean about being obstreperous) so they had to run her plates to confirm she was a guest.

Couldn't this have just been nipped in the bud if she sat by the pool and watched her kids and didn't leave them unattended? Instead this gets turned into one of those "racist" stories when I view this as a child neglect story. I don't know the age of the kids, but why is she out in the parking lot sitting in her car while her kids are in the pool? I can understand why that would appear suspicious, or at least why one would question (regardless of race…it has nothing to do with race, it's children being unattended in a pool…that's LIABILITY for the hotel).

And of course, the staff got fired because today everything is about race. Didn't anyone think about those children?

The Williamston Police Department said in a statement that officers were called to the hotel for a report of a person trespassing. Staff at the hotel said that two children were in the pool unattended and Williams-Wright was sitting in her car in the parking lot.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

The woman who got fired has a case but why go back to the idiot who fired her? I'm sure she can find something better

Re: Woman fired for calling police

I'd think so.

I just thought about those poor kids not being supervised in a body of water. Kids can drown even in 3 feet of water, and you know how kids like to horse around…especially if mom's not watching.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Because if she was concerned about the children she would have walked up to them and asked them if they were guests of the hotel, not call the police.

Is that a normal employee reaction? Unattended children = call the police?

If so I hope they lock up all the little white brats splashing around alone while their alcoholic parents get drunk at the mini bar. Or do white people never do that?

Racism doesn't exist in your mind does it?

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Leaving the front desk is a good way to get fired, but you're right that she shouldn't have called the cops.
If something happens, I guess she's negligent. But better to be fired for that than racism.

Davenport's preferences are outstanding.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

If they were white kids do you think she would have called the police?

Doubt it.

But let's say she did.

Let's say it was a bunch of white kids and the employee called the police because they were swimming in the pool without a parent around. Would the employee have gotten fired? Probably because it's completely inappropriate, bad customer service and the white parents would have complained until they got someone fired anyway. If you don't want to make it about race, make it about poor work performance. It's legit either way.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Yes, I think she made a rookie mistake.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

The Williamston Police Department said in a statement that officers were called to the hotel for a report of a person trespassing. Staff at the hotel said that two children were in the pool unattended and Williams-Wright was sitting in her car in the parking lot.

"Hampton Inn staff advised that they inquired from the adult to see if they were a guest at the hotel and the adult refused to provide their name and room number," the statement read. "Hampton Inn staff advised that they told the adult to leave the premises and called for law enforcement."

During the exchange, one of the officers asks Williams-Wright for her name and room number but she says she won't give it to them because she did nothing wrong.

All she had to do was give her name and room #.

She turned this into an overblow affair. I'm simply stating that a desk worker saw children playing in the pool unsupervised, which would qualify as tresspassing. Why would a mother not be with her kids, and refuse something as simple as giving her name and room# to staff when asked? It would have stopped this whole thing. But she preferred the big hoopla. That's what I mean by how one conducts oneself. This was unnecessary. Regardless of colour/race.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

She didn't have to do a damn thing except leave that woman alone, and mind her damn business. If she was worried about the kids, she could have asked them to get out of the pool, or go get a superior/senior staff member to handle the situation. Not call the fucking cops.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

The entire thing is based on the assumption that she doesn't belong there and isn't a guest.

I don't blame the guest for not giving her name and room number because she didn't do anything wrong to warrant them harassing her.

Are you telling me they call the police every time someone is sitting in their car? Do they call every time they see kids without a parent? I doubt it.

So what made this woman and these children so special that they needed to be singled out?

The employee made wrong assumptions about the woman and her family which is terrible customer service and a legitimate reason to be fired.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

My guess is liability. If those unsupervised kids drowned on your watch, how would you feel?

Plus, my guess (and that's all it is), the cops were not called for trespassing on the white kids because the mother was there watching the kids in person?

I'm also guessing she "singled out the kids" who were there unsupervised". I have no idea, but leaving your children unattended is irresponsible (regardless of race).

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Well she did a terrible job, was unjustified in calling the police and deserved to be fired.

Period.

Oh and never once did you empathize for the woman and her children who were actually harassed here. Why no sympathy for them, Lilith?

Don't you think she was wronged for being singled out and harassed even after showing her room key and proving she was a guest there?

You see nothing wrong there?

Why are you in defense of the employee who acted wrongly and harassed paying customers?

Re: Woman fired for calling police

My first concern was with a mother sitting in a car and leaving her children unsupervised in a pool. I guess I just have this fear that kids can get rough horsing around and I'd be afraid that one or both could get hurt or drown. You'll notice that's where I keep redirecting my concern.

I also quoted above that the guest refused to identify herself when asked, according to the article I read, and if she had done so, this never really had to get blown into such a giant affair.

The Williamston Police Department said in a statement that officers were called to the hotel for a report of a person trespassing. Staff at the hotel said that two children were in the pool unattended and Williams-Wright was sitting in her car in the parking lot.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

If you look at the video, the parking lot is located directly NEXT TO THE POOL. Where she can sit in her car and watch her kids swimming. You keep trying to excuse the bad behavior of the hotel clerk, when there really isn't a valid excuse for her actions.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Why wouldn't she tell the clerk her name and room# when asked? This whole thing could have been completely avoided.

I'm not trying to "excuse" anyone's behaviour, I'm simply expressing other opinions that might be different. To be honest, and again, just my opinion, I don't understand why a mother would sit in a car and not sit out by the pool in case her kids needed her. I don't understand that because any time I've been to a pool, there was always a parent present.

Regardless of race, (I keep emphasizing that), I come back to that because I don't get it. If I were a mom, I'd want to be able to jump in if something happened. THAT was why I brought this up. Not race, not cops, not excuses, nothing bigger than that, but it's turning into something it was never meant to be.

Thinking back, if my mother was asked the same question, she'd just give her name and room # if they thought I was an unattended minor in the pool. Why not just do it?

Re: Woman fired for calling police

She doesn't have to give that woman her name if she doesn't want to. Her room key should have been identification enough. How in the heck does the clerk think she came about the key in the first place? Stole it?

All she had to do was check the guest list. When you check into a hotel, they get a copy of your driver's license or photo ID. Had she taken her lazy ass to the front desk and looked through the recent check-ins to find out who she was, that situation could have gone without incident.

I'm not trying to "excuse" anyone's behaviour

You are, because what the employee of that hotel did was wrong and not called for. Were she actually concerned about the kids (whose mother was sitting there in the parking lot looking at her kids swimming), she could have gone to her supervisor and informed them of the situation.

Rather than do that, she took it upon herself to needlessly get the cops involved. Completely wasting their time over something that was NOT an emergency situation.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

Why didn't the employee apologize after she saw the woman was a guest and had a room key?

Why didn't she just do that? I think that would have calmed the down the paying guest.

The guest showed her that she had a right to be there and the employee was wrong to have made certain assumptions.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

I'm assuming you watched the video because we both know that the customer showed her room key to both the officers and the employee. Why didn't the employee apologize for her mistake, say she was glad the kids were okay and then walk away? That's what would have been appropriate.

The white lady needed to acknowledge that she probably misjudged the woman and her family. There are often hundreds of people at a hotel at one time and it's impossible for any employee to know every guest. At no point did the employee consider that she had made a mistake. That's a big error especially in customer service. If she had done that, there would have been no escalation of the incident.

Alerting the police should never have been a consideration in this scenario and if I were the manager I would have fired the white person as well.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

No I didn't see the video because I don't click on links. I only read the article which I posted here twice which stated she did not provide her name or room#. If she did, then the article misrepresented the facts of the case.

There's no way to state what the staff would have done if there were unsupervised white children, but in today's climate, I feel like everything is having a racial aspect whether it's race-based or not.

If the staff could locate the mother of the unsupervised children in the parking lot and she provided the info, there absolutely would be no reason to have involved the police for any reason.

Then this conversation is essentially over and meaningless, because you are only getting half the story. You can't effectively argue for or against a point if you are ill-informed.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

If the employee had owned up to her error, apologized, and not involved the police then the entire thing could have been avoided.

But this is what happens when people make incorrect assumptions, involve unnecessary individuals, and refuse to admit when they have wronged someone. It’s just a matter of good customer service.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

I agree.

Not everyone or everything is motivated by race. I was not there, but that sounds like an overreaction to fire the woman. It sounds like the hotel was terrified of offending the PC Police and the SJW's, and took the coward's way out.

As Rodney King said, "Why can't we all just get along?"

Re: Woman fired for calling police

She didn’t have to give anything. The situation did not require cops or intervention on the employees behalf in the first place. The employee was fired for negligence of common sense for putting the hotel in a bad light.

Nobody is ever required to be blindly compliant to police officers just because they want information, especially when they are minding their damn business. And again you’re placing the responsibility on the victim of the situation to prevent their own harassment.

Do you not see how fundamentally irrational you sound?

You can’t explain racism to people who refuse to believe it exists. Some people live in ivory towers or have a sheltered existence and don’t get it. You’re right , but it’s a waste of time.

You know, I noticed black men are especially smart in certain ways, too, and colored females, like Middle Eastern, are beautiful.

People used to write better a long time ago or in England, it seems, including Martin Luther King, Jr, way smarter than me in many ways like anyone then. Americans always seem a bit lazy in the head.

Yep. Reach the mother, and confirm she's a registered guest. But she has to be willing to provide her name and room# to confirm, and agreed, that's a much wiser way to handle the whole thing.

Re: Woman fired for calling police

The thing that made it come across as racist to the woman being questioned and to other POC watching that video is when she made the statement 'people like you are always a problem'.

Um? People like who? When the woman asked her to clarify that statement, she refused to answer. That's suspect.
