The Watercooler : dbentley Appreciation Thread.

dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I've met another person on filmboards who is trained in, and actively enjoys discussing, literature. I have died and gone to heaven, and all that remains of me is burning appreciation for the professor known as dbentley. Bless his literary competence and affable nature. Bless his breaks between grading. Three cheers for bentley. Hip, hip, hooray!

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I don't really know him, but he seems to get hyper.
So he fits in perfectly on the TWD board. 👁

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I'm a fan.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

He seems like a pretty cool guy.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

He cares about these helpless mortals?

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I already believe that we live multiple lives. I'm a spiritualist / pagan, after all.

see you in 2120 AD ;)

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I’m so glad you found each other

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

It's a beautiful thing. Do you know how hard it is to find people who care that Goethe stole Faust from Christopher Marlowe?

Neither is this one.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I approve

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I read your appraisal of 1917. Good shit.

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Very good movie, I was surprised

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Definitely deserving of all the awards it won. I thought it pummeled Dunkirk.

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I agree. I thought Dunkirk was good but pretty forgettable when compared to 1917.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Absolutely. I saw Dunkirk in cinemas once. I saw 1917 in cinemas nine times.

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

9 times. Cheer leading for the crown ey?

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

To be fair, it was free all but the first three visits. I had the new version of the MoviePass that lets you see a film as many times as you want at no extra cost.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

And now because of people like you they went bankrupt.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

They sure the heck did not. I'm locked into a year-long contract with Regal and the cinemas aren't even open.

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Movie pass is a separate entity. You should have said Regal cinema pass.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

My apologies. I am both a dumb bitch and an idiot, so errors honestly should have been anticipated.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Jesus fucking christ, well done

The only movie I saw more than 3 times at the cinema was The Ring, for various complicated reasons..

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I'm really curious to hear these reasons…

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

It's not that interesting.

It came out when I graduated High School. I saw it once myself and it creeped the shit out of me.

The following week was Schoolies (translated: Australian version of Spring Break, held at the Gold Coast). Nights were spent partying but the days were mostly spent getting high on the beach, on four of those days I talked different small groups of friends/girls into seeing The Ring with me

It was a pretty fuckin' scary movie to watch at the cinema, at the time it may have been the scariest thing released in cinemas during my life time - the big bonus being that it was actually good!

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I have to admire your game, getting easily-scared high school girls to watch a horror film with you.

I do remember that film coming out, and catching glimpses of it on my friend's television. That one and the Grudge kept me awake all night, seeing as I happened to live in Japan at the time.

It's odd to look back on those films, as watching them now reveals just how cheesy they really were.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

The Grudge (US) was pretty bad, but that ghost was creepy

I think The Ring still holds up as a good horror flick, but it's flaws are so much more noticeable. It still has fantastic visuals, a great soundtrack with a tight script but the pacing and some of the editing is way too "safe".

And I was never a fan of the look of Samara's face at the end, would have been better just showing the eye like in the original Japanese version.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I still look away whenever the tape plays. I've never actually seen the cursed video.

The creepiest thing about the Grudge was walking around the schoolyard and hearing everyone imitating that godawful

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

God dammit, people like you are the reason that every time Rachel sees something she remembers from the tape - a lame flashback shot is edited in to remind us idiots of why what she's seeing is so damned relevant

You cannot cheat death by not watching the tape

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

I know, I'm sorry. I've got too much of an imagination. Have you ever heard of Teke Teke? That shit kept me from using our school's bathrooms for a month.

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Haven't heard of Teke Teke. If I looked up the right movie, it's about a legless ghost.

It'll take some exceptional storytelling for me to dive back into the world of Japanese Horror. Until then, the next Japanese movie on my to-watch list is Tokyo Gore Police, which looks so ridiculous that I may actually watch it dubbed.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Do NOT watch the movie. Dear God, please don't. It's horrendous.

Teke Teke is a girl who was hit by a train and was subsequently torn in half. Inexplicably, she is said to haunt bathroom stalls. She travels around on her elbows, which makes a teke teke sound. If you encounter her, she will ask you where her legs are. If you answer incorrectly, she will tear you in half, just as she was torn in half. We were told that she would appear to us within one month of hearing the story.

As a ten-year-old living in the country of her origin, I wasn't having that shit. I held it until I got home until that month ran out.

I've never heard of Tokyo Gore Police. What's the premise?

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

That's a spooky premise, sounds like a tricky thing to form into a good movie

No idea what the premise of Tokyo Gore Police is, I think it was on a list of "must see" movies featuring insane amounts of violence and ridiculous practical effects.

Hopefully it'll be fun for what it is.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Sounds amazing already. Was Dead Alive on the list?

How unfortunate to be born at the end of the universe.

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

It's always on those lists

I've seen it a bunch of times for the lawnmower scene alone

Re: dbentley Appreciation Thread.

Well-deserved placement. I watch it for Father McGruder.
