Re: Goddamn fcking hippies!!

lol

there was one article about this movie that couldn't quite handle nor understand Rick's hatred for hippies since hippies are, after all, the mentors of all journalists etc

the thing is, the hippie kids turned off a lot of actors and made once-liberals (who were different in a different era) into what James Cagney called himself post-sixties an arch conservative: also included on that list is a guy named Ronald Reagan)…

that said, if you look at the actors who Rick was based on, it was guys like Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood (had they not gotten big following their Western TV roles) and Ty Hardin, who were all somewhat on the conservative level back then and even more-so later, and he was (RICK that is) not a fan of hippies, or how the culture had shaped into hippies…

the irony of the Manson Family is only later would they be separated from the hippie counter-culture given their violence… before that, they were simply hippies who had the same political beliefs as the "pigs" (who were rich, and hippies hated rich folk): including the fact they were all environmentalists; in fact, Manson STILL has a "GREEN" website, alive and kicking online…

but what I think is part of Leo's brilliance in this movie is that it was in fact a performance: his Rick Dalton is NOTHING like Rick Dalton…

I loved Rick's hesitation with all the makeup Sam Wanamaker was describing. When he pointed out he wouldn't make him a true hippie but more Hell's Angels look I was just as relieved. The hilarious vroom sounds he makes splits my sides.

Rick is a guy who hated the counter culture. he wasn't Cliff, who dug it. he hated hippies because he was a middle-age guy afraid of his future, and the cowboy show days were, with a few exceptions like Gunsmoke, on the way out.

Just wanted to ask you what's wrong.
Hippies are fun! ♥

And then I realized that SealedCargo bumped this 3 years old thread.
Hmmmmm, SealedCargo gives me XXPO vibes.

Re: Goddamn fcking hippies!!

There's a plot hole in this movie that always bothered me. It's easy for viewers to miss this because we have context.

Leonardo Dicaprio witnesses a woman break through the glass of his patio door, screaming in pain, covered in blood, appearing to be blinded, who then falls in a pool.

He has no context of who she is. He did not see the burglary nor does he know what just took place with Brad Pitt.

From Leo's vantage point, she could have been a victim of someone else herself, and was trying to escape the house.

So what's Leo do? He grabs a flamethrower and burns her alive to death.

There was not even a clear indication (from Leo's POV) that she was intending to attack Leo with the weapon, because she shot upward, but even so, it would've been understood in her condition, if she was just assaulted, let alone blinded.

Tarantino forget to write that a clear indication for Leo that this girl is a villain.

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Rick Dalton is one of the greatest movie characters ever!
