Computers and Software : Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I have a Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia, and suddenly the internet won't connect to it. All my other devises are fine and the internet is working on everything else. I thought it might be the latest update that did the damage, so I went back to a previous version, but still no luck. I'm working on an old laptop now, different set up. Any ideas, people?

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Did you check to make sure it's plugged in?

Lol. Everything else is working fine. I tried turning it off and on again!

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Done that.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

What internet security are you using?

Did you stick in a CD given with your internet?

Are you wifi enabled?

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I have internet to my phone, and tablet and this old laptop. It's only the Linux that is at fault. I went on the Linux help line and it seems that this internet thing might be a defect in some of the Linux versions. I'm totally disenchanted with Linux and will go back to Windows.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Have you had linux before, there could be a simple command that could be typed into the start up, starting with C:// sumthing.

Do you have any IT experts in your family, it may be that it needs to be typed into your computer commands. You could be charged for a simple IT job that involves a command.

Get your nephews over, you know the generation Z assholes. I have them too in my family

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Have you asked that ohio ninja turtle dork @nimda, don't tell @twizlee I called him that or she'll kill me!

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Make sure wifi is actually turned on and not airplane mode.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

If its John McAfee and she was asked to insert her internet setup cd, the fucker will delete the program inside of the internet.

Happened to me once but I haven't used linux since windows 95.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Wifi is turned on.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Well what's actually happening? Does it try to connect to the wifi and fails? Discovers other networks but not your own? Fails to find any connections?

And why are you using Linux anyway? Just install windows 10 for best experience.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

The wifi icon in the tool bar has a cross which means there is no connection. When I click on that cross I get a grey menu with 'enable wifi' as one of the options. When I click on that nothing happens. It's just plain dead.

The linux was given to me by a friend who didn't like windows, and was in love with Linux. He was an expert in everything to do with it. Up until then I was using Windows 7 and I loved it. Unfortunately he was killed in a car accident last year, and I lost my Linux IT man.

I'm done with it now.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Is this on a laptop?

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

No. It's on an old fashioned desk top Acer. Got plenty of grunt when it's working.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Why not go onto dell and see if theres a deal on windows 10 laptops, you don't need a great processor or gc just enough to see hd or 4k if your into 4k

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

That will be the next thing I do.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Just fuck about with your options, you'll get sumthing at $500-$600 for 15in screen or maybe cheaper if you go below 15in

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I bet the built in wifi has gone bad. You can buy a cheap usb wifi adapter online for $2-$3 dollars which will probably fix your problem.

If that's what the problem is, installing windows 10 won't help fix it. I would just download and install it first and see if it works after that, and if it doesn't then you can buy a new wifi adapter.

I can send you link to install Windows 10 Pro directly from Microsoft site and tell you how to get a key for like $2 instead of the $200 that Microsoft charges for an install.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I already tried a new wifi dongle that I got cheap from the local tech shop. I thought that would be the answer, but it didn't work either. The computer is fucked.

Thanks for your help. I guess I'm going to need a new Windows 10 computer. Laptop.

I'd never recommend Linux to anyone.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Just install the windows 10 then. All you need is an 8gb usb stick to make this happen.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I have a couple of those. What do I do?

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I'll pm you the link after awhile, all you have to do is download the install, once you open it then it will create a bootable usb stick. Go into your bios and set the external usb as the first boot device and the install is pretty simple from there.

What you really need to do first though is pop open the case and inspect the caps. If they've gone bad, which I now strongly suspect, you'll need a new machine.

If any of the caps have any bulging on the end or look anything like that picture, throw away the machine and start over.

This is what they should look like, perfectly flat and smooth.

I popped the top but couldn't see anything like either of those pics. Here is a pic of the innards of mine. I still think the wifi on the computer has died because the ethernet cable didn't work either.

All those things sticking up with shiny metal tops are caps. They should say something on them like 1.6v or whatever. I don't see any damage to them in the pic, but it's not very good quality and I can't see everything.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Wired Ethernet cable cord usually works if I can't connect to it wireless. But like Rocket said, it may be built-in wifi system gone bad. One of my laptops had bad wifi problem similar to yours, so I used wired Ethernet cord and it works perfectly.

If I get pulled over, it better be a gay policeman riding on a unicorn.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Thanks for that ethernet info. I'll try it, but I think the computer's wifi has died.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

No problem! Hopefully it works for you! *fingers crossed*

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I tried the ethernet connection and it didn't work. :(

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Aw.

At least, we both tried. Sometimes, there is a much simpler way to make it work and sometimes, there is a pain in the ass way to make it work or sometimes, no way at all, but I do think Rogue's advice are good. Maybe too experienced for you, but I do think you should take it to someone who's quite experienced.

Edit: Try Rogue's advice first. But I agree, get some rests because I do understand some computers are such a pain to work with. And I'm short tempered.

Three?! His poor computer must be overworking. I don't blame him, though. I just upgraded my CPU recently in my computer when I noticed my old one seemed to be giving up. My computer improved, but like Nzer said, I may have to get the complete new PC, though. I do have Chromebook 14 (which is what I'm using right now) and Acer laptop since I believe that my motherboard is not going to last long because I noticed some signs. It's an old computer, had it since 2009/2010. Sigh….I'm going to miss using my old desktop computer. Lots of memories in it. I'd better save all the files and photos into my USB drive, though.

Hahaha that’s the great thing about computers… even when they die, their hard drive can last forever. But 10 years was a good and long run. You earned the chromebook.

Only $150, 16 GB of storage (but with 100 GB of cloud storage), and lightning fast WiFi speed? Worth it.

True about hard drive. During my unpaid internship back in community college I attended, my internship instructor gave me a task to destroy and wipe hard drives as a practice. At first, I thought it sounds hard as I've never done it before, but it turned out it's much simpler than expected. All you do is get any program like D-ban, pop the disc in, go to boot menu, choose the option that run the disc/CD or USB, and choose any option on what kind of wiping you want. Wiping the hard drive too longer than expected, though.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

My dad I think had a high position in banking, as he was IT. Is that what you mean? I don't know if he can fix your problem, still. He seems to know a lot about things, though. Do you need help right at this moment? What exactly is the problem, your Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia won't work on the internet, while you have other things that do? Maybe, I can print out your question and give it to him, if you think he'd know even. He might not know if there's something special about New Zealand, however.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

Thank you Christina. 🤗 I'm pretty sure now that the computer has failed and I might need a new one. There is no hurry for help because I'm using an old windows 7 laptop at the moment and it works fine on the internet.

Thanks! 👍

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

does the device boot up? or is this just a connection problem? if a connection problem only, try a safe mode start and then run whatever troubleshooter you have. ppl complain about windows all the time, but the built-in repair tools are unsurpassed.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

It boots up fine, and works fine in every way except for the wifi.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

if u can, run an installed troubleshooter. maybe that can id and fix the problem.

at this point i'm silent: rouge has brought in the big guns with spousal Tech support and since any bad info from him would mean her rep goes bad on here, what he says must be in the know. i'd follow his recomendations.

and hungry was right: once the system is repaired, toss linux and go windows 10.

Re: Any IT experts on Filmboards?

I asked my husband on your behalf and he wants to know what updates you made before the issues started showing
