Politics : Penitentiary recycling centers

Penitentiary recycling centers

The world has a trash problem. Having been in the army I can also asure you the military has training problems. We have a rather large prison population. That in itself is a whole 'nother issue.

I propose that we start converting our penitentiaries into a new class of recycle centers. Trash trucks dump the loads and prisoners sort the piles into paper, plastic, metal, biomass, etc. More violent and untrustworthy prisoners can handle the nastier material. Trusted inmates and short timers can be trusted with simple tools to dismantle more complex items like appliances in another area. Sorted materials can then be trucked out to other locations for further processing. This will help to mitigate the cost of the prison system. Obviously we can't have prisoners smuggling potentially dangerous items back inside so prisoners will strip and pass through an x-ray scanner on the way out of the recycle area, being issued a clean jumpsuit on the lockup side.

This plan will require extra guard manpower. This is where the army comes in handy. Soldiers need more realistic training on the proper procedure for conducting searches and dealing with and handling prisoners. They need to train while dealing with potentially real threats. It's pretty damn hard to treat a fellow soldier pretending to be a prisoner in a training exercise seriously. I've been there, done that. I know. The quality of the training as it is now is shit. Having detachments of soldiers rotate through for practical training would be an invaluable training tool.

I believe this is the best way to tackle the issue of solid waste disposal.

Beware the sound of one hand clapping.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

No, too much potential that the prisoners would use materials to make weapons.
More violent and untrustworthy prisoners can handle the nastier material.
Exposing some prisoners to toxic waste would end up in court and be ruled "cruel and unusual punishment".

You realize that all prisoners except the most violent are required to work now, right?

I have a better idea. Turn prisons into brothels.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

Cruel and unusual? Bullshit. If it is not cruel or unusual for civilian workers to dig through and sort half rotted food scraps and soiled baby diapers then it certainly is not for convicts.and just when are they going to have the opportunity to make anything. And even if they do manage to make something while under the watchful eyes of the guards and soldier they damn sure ain't going to be able to smuggle it out having to strip their dirty jump suits then walk through a body scanner.

Beware the sound of one hand clapping.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

Believe me, prisoners are adept at smuggling items through security in prison. There is no reason on earth to allow them anywhere near scrap metal let alone toxic substances. Not only would we have prisoners attacking each other and guards when they were working in the recycling centers. They would have access to toxic waste which would be a danger to the public.

Horrible idea - and prison staff and criminologists would just laugh it off.

It makes much more sense to allow professionals in the public sector to handle recycling.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

Prisoners are used to being monitored by small numbers of guards not large numbers of professional soldiers. I dont think they'd be getting away with shit.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

I've been there done that. They get away with all kinds of shit.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

They ought to put these people to good use. Seems like a damn good environment to train soldiers and drug sniffing dogs. Keep the soldiers rotating in and out so the prisoners cant build relationships. Use incentives. Better food for prisoners who behave. Water and a tasteless multi-nutrient bar for those who act like shitheads. Aside from sorting trash we could also stick them on excersize bikes powering electric generators. Make them generate electricity if nothing else.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

It's mandatory now that all prisoners work while in the pen. It is in California at least. But your choice of access to scrap metal and toxic waste is not a very wise idea.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

I'm talking about the sorting the type of stuff that ends up in you average trash truck. And doing so under 10x the normal guard and the guards being trained soldiers supervised by experienced civilian professional corrections officers. Will some be stupid enough to test their luck? Sure. Bet they wont try it twice after some soldiers feed them a face full of floor and an ass full of boot. And those soldiers who have altercations can be rotated out to prevent retaliation.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

But I'm telling you I've been in the pen and I know how it works. The guards are not the brightest bulbs on earth. And they can be bribed. And we don't need to waste the defense budget and our military monitoring prisons.

Again, prisoners are already required to work. And maybe in some states they already help in recycling. But your idea of giving access to scrap metal and toxic waste to prisoners is just lunatic.

Why? There's no point. Let them make license plates. Let them eat cake. But keep them away from dangerous materials.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

We are already wasting the defense budget on substandard training designed for the lowest common denominator. You can trust ME on that. Bribing soldiers who rotate in and out would be considerably more difficult. It also wouldnt cost us more that it already does. These are men who are being paid to train anyway. We are just changing where they do it.

So a prisoner has access to a pile of junk. May contain some scrap or toxic items may not. They work for 8 hours sorting crap under heavy guard. They proceed to the cool down area where they strip naked and pass through a full body scanner. Then they shower and are issued clean jump suits. The dirty are scanned and searched separately before being sent in to clean.

Explain to me how they are going to do a damn thing? With only 8 hours? With armed soldiers watching from elevated positions? 3 shifts never the same pile of trash twice? Drug sniffing dogs patrolling the cell blocks? I dont see them managing to get away with much. Trying sure. Succeeding? Lol!

Those few stupid enough to make multiple attempts can find themselves in solitary with a pedal device that powers the lights. On a diet of water and tasteless nutrient bars.

We dont need a shit load of licence plates. We need to take care of our massive trash problems.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

So while we go to war with Iran you want to tie our military up on a domestic problem of prisons and recycling?

That's not the job of the military and our Department of Defense would be the first to squash your plan. I see no benefit to replacing prison guards with the military.

You want to create some expensive government program to do a job which capitalism will take care of more effectively.

Recycling is a great industry for the private sector which provides jobs.

Re: Penitentiary recycling centers

What part of 'lowest common denominator training' did you not hear. It is piss poor training. And you are paying for it with your taxes. And our soldiers are paying for it in blood.

And Iran is irrelevant to the discussion even when some troops are deployed over seas there are still troops training at home.

Were you not fucking listening? There is little to no cost different between shipping troops to some empty field or village mockup to shipping the to the nearest recycle center. Those centers will pay for themselves by value of the mass of materials recovered. This is forcing the government to engage in capitalism.
