Re: All About Eve (1950)

A classic, and one of the greatest lines in film history!

😺 Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 🤨 Let's go, Brandon! 🤨 Try that in a small town.

Do you have a 'thing' for our MissMargoChanning?

Bette Davis was one of Hollywood's greatest stars

Great movie, and interesting that "Sunset Boulevard" is similar and just as great, also released in the same year.

Re: All About Eve (1950)

One of my top ten movies, by far.

The insurmountable Bette Davis.

Re: All About Eve (1950)

Yes, with the amazing Ms. Davis giving one of her greatest performances for sure. But it also has one of the best screenplays ever written by the incredibly talented Joseph Mankiewicz.

The great director Elia Kazan once said that it was a tragedy that Mankiewicz wasn't writing for the stage. I can't think of a bigger compliment than that.

Re: All About Eve (1950)

It doesn't hurt that Bette Davis is BY FAR one of my favourite actors of all time. What I appreciated the most about her was that while she had it, she did not rely on her sex appeal. She relied on her acting chops and diversity.

She did an interview once where she talked about one of her first auditions and she was asked to raise her skirt and show her legs. So she showed her ankles and a little bit of shin, and continued to read. They wanted to see more, and Bette Davis in all her glory flatly refused and with confidence replied, "What do my legs have to do with my acting ability?"

I fell in love!

She never played the game. She played THEM! She was of the definitive strong New England stock and it showed. She carried herself with such confidence. She knew who she was, be damned, and if you didn't like it, you could rightly screw off.

What's not to love?

She also had this chameleon ability to morph herself for her roles. Something we applaud actors like Gary Oldman and Christian Bale for today precisely because it's become that rare.

Re: All About Eve (1950)

I've never heard that, but I fully believe that about her. She's sturdy, in an elegant way. She exudes this power that clearly states: Don't fuck with me.

I've often wondered if that made things difficult for her on an intimate level.

She was always very professional and upstanding, that I knew.

One thing MissMargoChanning had to straighten me out on, was when I commended on seeing her in what I thought was a TV show that was beneath her. She was wearing this long blonde wig, a wide brimmed hat, and huge glasses, and it was obviously so fake, yet it really hadn't occurred to me that was the point, as she hopped on the back of a motorcycle.

Margo explained how acting was really in Bette Davis' blood, and she wanted to work, straight through to the end, and was not stuck up about what she'd take. This is where I think of Joan Crawford (or at least what I know of her based on the public image I've learned, which may or may not be accurate).

I didn't read the scene or Bette's perseverance accurately in that TV show.
