Classic Film : The Happy Ending

The Happy Ending

A few years ago, I had to pay for it, but now its on YouTube… It's a 10/10. Just stick with it, since there is a slow scene or two, but its significant for the movie's theme of depression, and how endless shopping sprees won't solve it, and it won't necessarily gain the attention of the one you love.

Re: The Happy Ending

I have seen all those movies, really liked "Rachel, Rachel".. "Wanda" was interesting because Barbara Loden did it all - writing, directing, starring. I'd like to revist it. "The Rain People" was ok, too, I liked James Caan, didn't like any of the characters, especially those trying to take advantage.

Never saw "Up The Sandbox" - I can't stand Barbara

Re: The Happy Ending

I think this is one of the overlooked films of the sixties, with a very worthy Oscar nod to Jean Simmons for her powerful performance. It's my understanding that the film, as written and directed by Richard Brooks, is basically the story of their marriage and her drinking at the time. She was able to overcome that problem in time, but I know that it must have contributed greatly to the veracity of her performance in the film.

Re: The Happy Ending

Yeah, that's quite a movie that reflects real life. Brooks is such an underrated director… I think it's the best movie about depression… Even from the beginning, the first scene is of her crying at a happy ending, at the drive-in… She falls in love, gets married, has a daughter, very upper middle-class, BUT, she's not happy, drinks too much, and finds an old friend who seems to have some problems, but seems happier.
