Music General : Why do all young singers try to sound black?
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
Well these days the quality in every genre is overrated imo. That's why I've kinda preferred music prior to mid-2000's. But even now I'm sick of listening to those time periods as well.
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
I don't blame ya. Roberta Flack does it for me. Its a sad commentary when a 75-yr old singer beats the hell out of a 20-yr old with young vocal chords.
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
This is perfect.
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
I got chills within the first second
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
I don't like lyrics at all. The song is catchy but I don't really care for men singing to me like the lyrics describe how she adores the guy singing to her. I never really have.
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
I read once that the song was written about Don McLean, and the way he was singing to an audience. It was her personal experience of hearing him sing, and how she felt. He obviously felt nothing for her. He was singing to the crowd at his concert.
How does he make you feel?

I feel alright about it.

Roberta Flack didn't write the song, but the people who did write it disagree about whether it was about Don McLean. Here's some info, if you're interested:

I knew she didn't write the song, but thank you for all that extra information Crystal. You can always be counted on to come up with something more educational and interesting. :)
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
Sorry, I misunderstood your other post.
Thanks! I didn't know the subject matter in the song was "disputed" either until a few years ago, when I was going to post about the song in a music thread on the IMDb Music board. I looked it up to make sure I was right, in case my memory was wrong about the song's inspiration. That was when I found out there was a disagreement about it.

My post was ambiguous. Sorry.
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
They do it because they admire the awesome soulful sound. Don't forget Gladys Knight as one of the very best.
Joss Stone comes close here, but it feels a bit forced… too much focus on technique. I believe she has the chops to pull off an almost perfect copy of the song if she'd just relax a bit and focus on the phrasing.
Apparently, stupid people don't know they're stupid.

Joss sounds like Jizz. That was awful. I put the cursor somewhere in the middle, and I heard that fake "mmmm" shit-sound.

I have no legs
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
its because they aren't singers. they use tricks. adele sounds like shit live. they just steal old shit
Re: Why do all young singers try to sound black?
I'll say it again. Listen to the 60/70s and save yourself from having a heart attack, or death due to lack of soul nutrition.

I tend to like the soft, melodic feminine voices, but here's a tough gal, who passed away a couple of years ago, and cousins with Dionne. More singers in one family than the last 40 years combined.
