Western : Discrimination and racism in Old western movies

Discrimination and racism in Old western movies

The North American natives, indians if you like, are always depicted as bad, brutes and someone who has to be killed no matter what

Prove me wrong

Well, this is a tomb. I'll make them feel at home

You might agree with the lyrics to this song.

Re: Discrimination and racism in Old western movies

Not only John Wayne. Old western movies are transmitting a wrong view about native Americans

Well, this is a tomb. I'll make them feel at home

Re: Discrimination and racism in Old western movies

True, older Westerns often portrayed Native Americans as primitive savages (even the 'good Indians' were portrayed that way) but newer Hollywood films do just the opposite: they tend to vilify whites and portray Natives as the wise and noble victims of European colonization. I think the truth is more ambiguous and lies somewhere in the middle. There were good and bad people on both sides and Hollywood's take on history has always been simplistic and flawed.
