A few great classics:

Roma, Open City (1945) - Roberto Rossellini's neo-realism masterpiece, starring the extraordinary Anna Magnani

Bicycle Thieves (1948) - one of Vittoria De Sica's neo-realism masterpieces

La Dolce Vita (1960) - Federico Fellini

Umberto D (1952), another Vittorio De Sica masterpiece

Re: Films set in and with scenes in Rome

I remember watching Bicycle Thieves when I was in college. It's an excellent film.

Bicycle Thieves

Yes, one of the seminal films of the neo-realistic movement, made entirely with real people, not actors, and so very moving. If you haven't seen De Sica's UMBERTO D, I strongly recommend that one, too. Well actually, I strongly recommend of all of these. They are profoundly important films and so deeply moving. Can't say enough good things about them.

EDIT: @ glynnpadraic

Well, except maybe for LA DOLCE VITA, which I like, but which I always thought of as a very "Hollywood-ish" kind of Fellini film.

I won't make claims about Angels and Demons being a good film (although I did enjoy it as a nonsensical thriller) but you do get a good tour of Rome with the added bonus of dead cardinals scattered around the landmarks.
