Classic Film : Films about teachers & education

Films about teachers & education

The teachers don't have to be the protagonists, but they must be important characters. Dramas, comedies, anything in between.

I particularly enjoy these, among others:

The Miracle Worker (1962)
Dead Poet's Society (1989)
The Corn is Green (1945)
The Blackboard Jungle (1955)
To Sir, with Love (1967)

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
Fasten Your Seatbelts….
It's Going To Be A Bumpy Night!

Up the Down Staircase

Another of my favorites. Loved Sandy Dennis in that.

Up the Down Staircase

Same year To Sir With Love came out. Another favorite of mine. 👍

The People

Oh, I wish I had seen this one! I love Kim Darby and the director John Korty. Don't know how I missed it.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

A real beauty, this one. Another of my favorites. And what a cast, especially Maggie Smith in her Oscar winning role. And I'm old enough to remember the Rod McKuen title song:

Thanks for this, Margo.

Call me stupid… I guess I need to be educated.

Oh, man –

You're talking to the dinosaur of dinosaurs (and a dedicated one at that). I once had to ask the very same question. And in my book asking questions never means being stupid, it means being smart!

Oh, man –

I need everything spelled out for me. Before long, everyone will be talking in abbreviations and initials. The English language will have become extinct.
Thanks for the explanation. 👍

Oh, man –

You're welcome. And I agree with you more than you know. It breaks my heart.

A personal favorite….
Love the sound track!

Mr. Holland's Opus

Another favorite. Dreyfuss was wonderful in it.

1984's "Teachers"

To this day the only motion picture that I'm actually in😁👍

Teachers

Forgot all about this one. I'm a big JoBeth Williams fan. And how did you come to be in it? An acting role, or were you an extra? Congratulations either way.

Teachers

I would have smashed jobeth like a potato back in the day😁👍

Yeah… An extra. it was filmed in the town I grew up in. Me and a few friends skipped school… got high AF and signed up. Don't really remember much other than nolte was kind of a dick and Muller was cool as could be😁👍

Teachers

I'm not sure what your first sentence means, but I know JoBeth, and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have liked that.

Anyway, I'm glad you had a good time being an extra. It can be fun; it can also be a lot of hard work.

Teachers

She would have liked it just fine😉

Re: Films about teachers & education

Dead Poet's Society - made me cry

Blackboard Jungle - exceptional

To Sir, with Love - Ooh la la! (It was funny seeing Hyacinth Bucket there)

"Life is tough. Get a helmet." – Candace Owens
"Not today, Satan!" – Blaire White

Re: Films about teachers & education

😊

Re: Films about teachers & education

I've brought this movie up before, but it's really composed of many different genres.

Definitely one of my favourite movies. (I have many, and this is way up there):

"Life is tough. Get a helmet." – Candace Owens
"Not today, Satan!" – Blaire White

The Trouble with Angels

Yes, I very much enjoy this one. It has a wonderful cast, and story, and it was directed by the pioneering female director (and actress), Ida Lupino, toward the end of her career.

The Trouble with Angels

Ida Lupino was a ground-breaker, without a doubt.

"Life is tough. Get a helmet." – Candace Owens
"Not today, Satan!" – Blaire White

The Trouble with Angels

👍👍

Re: Films about teachers & education

The Class, a 2008 French movie, is really good. Very realistic. Non-professional actors for the students, the main actor who plays the teacher wrote the novel it was based on about his time as a teacher. Less realistic and quite schlocky but fun is Class of 1984.

The Class

Oh, I haven't seen it, but this one sounds like a real winner. Thanks so much for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Dangerous Minds

An excellent performance by Michelle Pfeiffer.

Half Nelson

Missed that one. Don't see a lot of newer films these days. But it looks like it has merit. 😊

Re: Films about teachers & education

I don't know heard of this one, but It's called Handsome Devil

Handsome Devil

Way too new a film for me; only see a handful of new ones anymore. But it has an interesting, important premise. And I like that it's Irish.

Handsome Devil

What do you think of this?

Pink Floyd The Wall

Can't tell from the trailer. Like some Alan Parker movies, really don't like others. This would probably fall into the second category.

The Children's Hour

Excellent choice. Just saw it again recently. The earlier version, These Three (1936), is also very good. It was censored at the time (back in the days of the Hays Code) so the (potential; never quite sure, really) lesbian aspects were removed. William Wyler directed both, nearly three decades apart. To be honest, I thought The Children's Hour was not Shirley MacLaine's best performance, though everyone else was quite good. And I, for one, think that young Veronica Cartwright deserves a special nod for her stellar supporting role.

Carry On Teacher

Carry On Teacher

Never saw this one, but it looks like fun. Thanks.

Re: Films about teachers & education

Children of a Lesser God (1986)

Children of a Lesser God

Oh, what a beauty this one is. Nominated for Oscars for best picture, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, and best screenplay, with Marlee Matlin rightly winning as best actress.

But the director, Randa Haines, was robbed of a nomination as best director, and that was a disgrace! She deserved better.

Anyway, the film is a joy to watch, especially with Matlin's wonderful performance; also seeing William Hurt literally fall in love with her moment by moment on screen. That gave the story an added palpable intensity.
