Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Deborah Kerr, Rosalind Russell, Myrna Loy, Grace Kelly, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, Jane Wyman, Doris Day

They're all great
Re: Favourite actor and actress from the classic Hollywood era
I would take Audrey Hepburn out of the list (I never understood her appeal) and substitute Katharine Hepburn.
Exceptionally well-rounded list.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
Of course, there is Bette, but she has already been mentioned.
Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson.
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

Re: Favourite actor and actress from the classic Hollywood era
Filmboards resident black male nympho reminded me that I'd forgotten one of my favorite screen actors. If he wasn't part of the classic film era, I'm including him anyway. There needs to be a black face somewhere within classic film cinema.
Sidney Poitier
Sidney Poitier is definitely part of the classic film world, and he's definitely a giant in that realm.
And now, along with him, you've reminded me of another favorite of mine that I forgot: Cicely Tyson. She was amazing in so many things, but especially in SOUNDER, which I just saw again the other day. That was in 1972 and that year made history for African American actors.
Tyson received a best actress Oscar nomination for that film, Paul Winfield received a best actor nomination for playing her husband, and Diana Ross received a best actress nomination for LADY SINGS THE BLUES - the first time in history that three African American actors were nominated in the same year. Thank God and about time!

Thank you, Spider. I was feeling so out of place on this board.
I don't have that much of an issue with discussing caucasian actors, directors or screenwriters from the classic film era. I love movies so much that oftentimes, I accept things the way they are. It's just that at some point, I disconnected with you all.

You're welcome. I can understand how hard it must be to some extent, given that I have some Native American heritage, which comes with its own sense of alienation. But we all need to remember that there have been some very talented black actors, writers, and directors long before it became more the norm, if you can call it that.
I'll try to remember that when I post henceforth. Right now I just want to add a couple of favorites from the long ago classic era:
Hattie McDaniel, who was the first African American nominated for AND WON an Oscar for best supporting actress in GONE WITH THE WIND. I didn't much care for that film (unlike most people), but I loved her.
And another remarkable actor, Juano Hernandez, who gave a deeply moving performance in YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN as a great trumpet player who teaches a young Kirk Douglas how to play. Oh, he was so wonderful in that film, here listening with pride at what his hard work accomplished:
and another of his wonderful performances in INTRUDER IN THE DUST as a black man wrongly accused of murder:
This actually deserves a thread of it own. I'll do my best to come up with one.
