Marilyn Monroe : Goodbye Norma Jean.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Thanks to the Kennedys I think a lot of people took a lot of things to the grave, one way or another.

Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine had great chemistry together. One of my favourite movies is Irma LaDouce, and they're wonderful together, so natural, so comfortable.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Irma LaDouce! I had forgotten about that! Thank you for reminding me. I must admit that I have only seen that once in my life… as a child.

I agree with you about that scene in The Apartment where Jack looks into the mirror she offers at the office party. He's really into her, and then, in that moment there is such disappointment. A great scene. Great movie!

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

This was such a fun movie! I've only been able to rent it because I can't find it, and when it pops up on TCM, it's not available to buy or I'd definitely buy it. Love it!

Yes, oh The Apartment, and that scene. You could feel his heart crushing. But once again, and another example of powerful acting. Something so simple, yet so compelling.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

It's one great actor who can convey one emotion at one moment and in an instant, suddenly turn it into something else.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Absolutely! So much was conveyed, with a look, a glance, a subtle change in emotion, or dips in the score that weren't so loud and overt that it was overpowering. The incomparable skill of actors beautifully portrayed.

This movie looks interesting.

Why so serious?

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

I think people always try to imitate people they admire. That's how the fashion industry works. Look at whatever Kate Middleton wears and suddenly everyone wants to buy it. Or makeup artists who have incredible skill can convince the average Jane Doe to invest in hundreds of dollars in dozens of products thinking they can "replicate" a certain look.

Even Marilyn Monroe was "created" and changed from her original "self" and this new glamour image was developed. Howard Hughes was famous for "discovering" beautiful women, but he essentially recreated them. Jean Harlow turned into the original blonde bombshell.

I personally think that Marilyn is an icon, and we'll never see another woman as unique and beautiful as she was. She exuded sensuality as well as fun and playfulness. She's a template, so women will try and use the same makeup, hair colour and style, clothing,…she was such a mystery because I feel like she was always "on" being this image, and I wonder if she ever got to just relax and be herself without expectations, acting, and being used for her sex appeal.

Was she a damaged bitch?

🌚

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Damaged? Possibly.
She didn't exactly start out with much of a stable foundation.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Love Marilyn as a sweet innocent moll in John Huston's terrific film noir gem The Asphalt Jungle.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

I don't know how I could have overlooked The Asphalt Jungle.
She was great in that.
Another earlier one that may not be as great, depending on opinion would be Don't Bother To Knock. I personally liked it. She just about broke your heart in that one.

No shit, Sherlock.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

I was reading some article somewhere in my newsfeed a few weeks ago, interviewing salon owners in NYC and they said since the lockdowns, virtually all the blondes disappeared from New York since March!

Lots of bottle blondes. I always loved Marilyn's bit of a widow's peak. She's one woman who seemed to pull off the platinum better than her natural hair colour.

What a loss. Such a beauty, and a national treasure! ❤

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Some people pull off the bottle blonde look better than others. For example, I never thought Lisa Kudrow was a natural blonde. But I always assumed Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston we’re natural blondes. However, all three of them are bottle blondes and have naturally brown hair (and quite dark brown hair.)

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

I always thought Jennifer Aniston was naturally blonde as well. It's strange seeing her with brown hair, because now I think that looks fake, lol

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

Blonde and Black are stark hair colors that can make a person striking. This is why a lot of naturally brunette actresses dye their hair blonde. I don’t think someone like Sarah Jessica Parker would have ever gone as far in Hollywood had she not gone blonde. The blonde makes a huge difference in their looks. Same for Lisa Kudrow.

But someone like Mira Sorvino looks actually better as a brunette.

You couldn’t imagine Anniston as a brunette? Really? She pretty much had brown hair during the first couple seasons of Friends, especially during the Rachel haircut years.

Re: Goodbye Norma Jean.

What about Dita Von Tease with her jet black hair? She's a natural BLONDE! Can you picture her with blonde hair? I really can't. She looks striking with her jet black hair.
