My boss thinks I’m embezzling money, over something stupid.

In our computer database system, we have all of our clients information listed. There’s a spot to put there email address, however, we don’t have all of our clients emails unless they leave one with us. So this space is typically left blank. If they’re email is left with us, they’ll get periodical information about our legal services.

What I’ve been doing is making them up with an email I figure would be active.

Say for example a client’s name is Jason Hammond. I’d put HammondJ@ Gmail as his email. I know that’d be a taken name, as Hammond is a common surname, and Gmail is used by the masses.

I honestly don’t have a good reason for doing it. I guess I just wanted to make the database more filled up, and appear more aesthetic and organized. We were never getting the real emails anyway, and we don’t use them to contact our clients with serious confidential information regarding them (we use postal), so It’s pretty harmless and trivial.

The extent of the consequences from this act is that some random person out there in the world would be getting our advertisement emails, who aren’t affiliated with us. It’s pretty harmless, really. Not a cause for serious concern. If anything, we’re advertising ourselves to a stranger, which is good.

The owner found out about this when I entered an email that wasn’t taken, and the message failure was sent back to him. He then checked the person’s report and the camera system and realized he never left an email with us.

So now I’m in trouble. He asked me about it, and I lied and told him the person called and gave it to me over the phone. He’d never understand my real reason.

He’s such an idiot. He suspects the idea that I’m putting my own emails that I newly create under client info, and somehow embezzling small amounts of company that way. Guy is a total douche.

You're falsifying documents or personal information, and once something gets sent online, it becomes a federal issue. You put his business at risk. He is not being stupid, he wants things done properly.

Also, in most law firms I'm aware of, yes, sensitive information IS indeed sent via email. You are potentially putting legitimate clients at risk of identity theft and the revelation of personal, professional, and financial information.

This is bad.

Lilith , you hit the nail on the head as usual . OP is being reckless with client information and doesn’t seem to understand why.
