Hacksaw Ridge : After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

It's official. Hacksaw Ridge is better than all or all but one (La La Land).

Love it or hate it, fact is no best picture contenders this year are better than it. There are a few that are okay/good, but they're all highly flawed.

Rundown:

Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight suck. They're pretentious garbage and it's a joke that they were so acclaimed for who knows what reasons. If there was any slow movies that should have made the cut this year, it should've been Loving and Silence. In any case, these are not great movies and really aren't even good.

Lion, Hidden Figures, and Hell or High Water are okay, but not even anywhere close to perfect. I'm still baffled that Hell or High Water made it all the way to the awards and Oscars unscathed. Its stealth like rise to awards recognition is still baffling because it's very far from flawless and just pretty good. Lion wasn't strong outside the first half with the kid, and even that wasn't that great, but the end was good enough.

MBTS, Lion, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight all can be Lifetime movies, especially in certain parts. Fences was a stage play, even though the two actors and supporting were great. It was boring too and overly redundant.

Arrival is entertaining and fun, but not without its share of flaws. That leaves only La La Land which is very well done and would be the only movie that clears Hacksaw Ridge. It has the least flaws and weaknesses. None of the other movies are as good as Hacksaw Ridge. And that's why it has been recognized as one of the top films of the year.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

Out of those that I've seen Arrival is my favourite. I liked Hacksaw a helluva lot. To me it lost a little of its moral authority with its triumphal ending, depicting the final assault as swashbuckling and glorious. Seemed to be a bit of a misstep after showing war in all its ugliness and brutality for the rest of the film. I won't get to see Manchester by the Sea before the Oscars probably but I'd like to catch Moonlight and Fences. I enjoyed La La Land but not as much as most it seems.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

I think LA LA Land will take it because it is more original, less formulaic. I believe that is why Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan.

But I like HR as a great classic war movie.

Live long and prosper.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

I liked parts of La la, but HATED the ending. So, it's not a film I'd watch again, well for free maybe.

I've seen them all and Hacksaw was my favorite. Manchester being the very last one.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

HR is a damn good war movie. But Oscar Worthy..? Nah. There are large stretches where it feels like a TV movie on steroids.

La La Land, Arrival and Manchester by the Sea are all farrrrrr superior. For an Indie film bought by Amazon, MbtS is freaking amazing. A reworked Director's Cut done right could make it even better.

Hacksaw Ridge is a damn good war movie butthat's all it is.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

Respect your opinion, but disagree.

Arrival had its share of cheesiness, and what worse a time to "arrive" at the biggest than at the climax: "let's make a baby". I was blushing for everyone involved in the movie at that one line. And they made it so subtleyeah, right. Also, it has a few plot holes and it DOES NOT hold up on multiple views. However, the effects were great, and it was good for one watch.

MBTS is the most overrated and overhyped movie of the year. It has so many flaws and problems, wouldn't know where to begin. It is an awful movie, and I would rather watch paint dry. I wanted to like it, too. So, no, that's not better either.

LA La Land, now you might have a point. I liked that and can't deny it's probably the best of the year, but personally I like HR more. Those are the top 2 of this year.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

Cool.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

This was the last one of the nine I watched.

I'd go

Hidden Figures
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Fences

any of the above 4 winning would be ok with me

then

Lion
La La Land
Manchester By The Sea
Arrival
Moonlight

Best Actor - Denzel
Best Actress - Haven't seen Elle or Jackie yet
Supporting Actor - Jeff Bridges
Supporting Actress - Nicole Kidman or Michelle Williams

Would have gone with Viola Davis for Best Actress but I can't really advocate the Supporting Actress for what is clearly a lead.

Re: After watching all of the contenders for best picture…

I feel kinda bad I haven't seen Fences or Lion.

I need to get on it.

We loved Manchester by the Sea, though. Maybe because we know a couple like Lee and Randibut their son got run over not burned. Ripped their souls right out of them. Divorce. Drugs. Stroke.

All the movies you mentioned in your post have also been recognized as best films of the yearso you're not exactly presenting a strong argument, heisenberg.
