Yes well Thin red line was the newest out of all the ones I listed. I really suggest watching Platoon, it won the oscar for best movie 1986, and it changed my life towards war, and war on film.

Hacksaw Ridge actually finds itself in my top 5.

Honorable mentions: Jarhead, Patton, The Hurt Locker, The Patriot, and Apocalypse Now.

I don't really like war movies, just never gained an interest in them, but out of the limited ones I have seen, mine would look something like this:

Saving Private Ryan-9
Hacksaw Ridge-8.5
The Patriot-7.5

That's about it. I've seen a few more, but I didn't like them and couldn't get into them.

Also, it's a little vague as to what constitutes a war film. I think what most people mean is more like the Vietnam movies that came out in the 70s and lots in the 80s with lots of green camouflage. But if we weren't including them, and just were talking about movies that centered around wars or past century wars were included, then I could add:

Zero Dark Thirty-10
Braveheart-10
Red Dawn-7.5
Atonement-7
Casualties of War-6

I didn't like Deer Hunter, Thin Red Line, Wind talkers, We Were Soldiers, Black Hawk Down, etc..

I tried to get into Platoon, but couldn't and never watched the whole thing, and I'm just not that interested in Full Metal Jacket. I'd like to watch it but I have no motivation to. For some reason, Vietnam War films don't interest me. I definitely prefer WW I and II. I know that.

In no particular order, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Born on the Fourth of July, Apocalypse Now.

John Woo did an excellent job with Windtalkers, it has to be the movie with the most spectacular explosions and hardcore action like only John Woo can deliver, haters are clueless.

Some TV shows are just as good though, Band of Brothers is a masterpiece, The Pacific was excellent tooHacksaw Ridge is a masterpiece but didnt make it on my list, close though. Mel Gibson did a great job and Hacksaw Ridge is one of my favorite war movie, top 5 is too short though
