Is it an insult to say young daughters look like their father?

I've known my neighbor for a while, and today I met his ex-wife and daughter, about 12 or so, for the first time.

I could easily make out the features on the daughter that the father had, and said to the mom, "wow, I bet she gets told she looks like her father a lot."

And the mother seemed kind of offended and daughter kind of sad, as if they misunderstood me, and took that phrase the same as suggesting she literally looks like her father - as in, a man. Which wasn't the case at all. The mom said, "I think she looks a lot of me."

I kinda regretted that one. Maybe I need a better way of wording that.

Liv Tyler is hot, but she looks like her dad. She doesn't literally look like her dad, as in you would confuse the two.

She has her father's dark hair and the shape of her eyes are more like his but she has blue eyes like her mom. Bebe is beautiful

I say if you don't want your daughter to look like your husband then don't have kids

I told my cousin his daughter looks exactly like him when he was little and he responded, "I know. It's a tragedy." But she really does look exactly like him. So I guess it's a thing.
