Bomb widow wants Martin McGuinness honour withdrawn

The widow of a man used by the IRA as a human bomb has said a "military service" award posthumously bestowed on Martin McGuinness must be withdrawn.
It comes after San Francisco Mayor London Breed apologised for the pain caused by the controversial accolade.

Kathleen Gillespie, whose husband Patsy was forced to drive a car bomb to an Army checkpoint, said her words would mean little unless the award was rescinded.

In 1990 she was held captive in her home by the IRA while her husband was strapped into a van packed with explosives and ordered to drive to the checkpoint at Coshquin on the Derry-Donegal border.

Mr Gillespie and five soldiers died when the bomb went off.

His widow said she was horrified to hear Mr McGuinness had been awarded a Certificate of Honour - equivalent to a freedom of the city award - for "courageous service in the military" and helping to secure peace.

Mrs Gillespie said it was a blow to victims of IRA violence, recalling how Mr McGuinness described her husband as a legitimate target of war.

She said: "I was enraged and horrified when I heard that Martin McGuinness was being honoured for military service.

"It was an awful slap up the face to victims and so inappropriate, but I think it shows the mentality of Irish people living in America.

"They have this romanticised view of what went on here which is completely wrong and far removed from the reality.

"The problem is, they don't go the distance to find out what the reality is and then, when they do something like this, they don't realise the deep pain they are causing people.

"There was nothing romantic about what the IRA did the night they told my husband to drive that bomb to Coshquin.

"This award should never have occurred in the first place but it should be rescinded immediately."

Mrs Gillespie said no thought had gone into the decision to recognise Mr McGuinness, adding: "Whoever thought the idea up didn't do any research about who it would affect, and while it is good that there has been an apology, words without actions don't count for anything.

"No one will take away from the good things that Martin McGuinness did towards the end of his life but that doesn't detract from the horrendous things he did wrong, too.

"It is hard for me to put into words how I feel now about Martin McGuinness because I had wanted to have a conversation with him about my husband and the way he died, but it never happened. He was the person who said Patsy was a legitimate target of war, but every time Martin McGuinness was to be somewhere I was, he cancelled, so I never got to have the conversation.

"But this honour is an absolute insult and it must be withdrawn publicly."

More than 2,200 people have signed an online petition asking the mayor to rescind the honour.

yes to giving Canada Alaska back, Guantanamo Bay back to Cuba, Occupied Hawaii back to Hawiian people!

Fine with me.

Actually, Alaska belonged to Russia not Canada. We purchased it from the Russians.

Re: American government honouring IRA terrorists like Martin McGuinness

You cannot purchase land, the new World belonged to Natives not the Russians. By having access to both sides of Canada, you fucks could blockade Canada in a new dispute or war just like in Gaza!

It "belonged" to whoever was strong and resilient enough to conquer it and settle upon it. North America was a big enough continent for both the so-called Natives (Asians) and European settlers. The Natives didn't formally "own" the New World. It was a vast and plentiful land and most of it was uninhabited. Today's international laws, many of which are necessary, would not have applied during the age of exploration (1400s-1600s).
