The Walking Dead : What are you reading this summer?

What are you reading this summer?

?

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Sounds like a bad horror movie: I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE READING THIS SUMMER!

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I am trudging with U.S. Grant though the Civil War, in Ron Chernow's 'Grant'. It's a tome.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Sounds gripping. I'm browsing through about 40 books on liberalism: Rawls, Dworkin, Nozick, Alan Ryan, John Gray, Kymlicka, etc. Rather enjoying it, truth be told.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

If you could start your life on a message board and not know what your exact lot in life would be, how would your organize the society of said message board?

Re: What are you reading this summer?

You would clearly choose a fate involving never being banned, being at least among the ten most popular posters, and never meeting Mange. The veil of ignorance is a damned good thing!

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I would design it so that everyone in the board society shared nudes, at the outset.

I still think that Rawls has the most powerful argument ever for a social welfare net.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I'm impressed by Rawls, but I find his argument so bizarre and counter-intuitive! Also, why do we need RATIONAL and utilitarian reasons for a social welfare net? It ought to exist because it is simply a good, not because we have selfish reasons for participating in it.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

It just helps rationalize it for the more logical thinkers among us. It's not necessary, but it's helpful.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Yeah, but I can't help feeling that it feeds into even more pragmatism and selfishness. He's like an insurance salesman who says: "You love your wife and family? Then you really need to take out a million dollar policy with me. It's not just love, it's common sense."

The actual roots of the welfare state, imo, is in a secularized version of Christian caritas.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

That's because deep deep down you are some sort of Red Tory, as I probably am too, and think society is more organic and less a bunch of contracts. And that the true core of a just society is the strong protecting the weak.

But I think Rawls is a neat thought experiment for small l liberals, that's including most Muricans here.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I agree. He's perfect for American consumption. I grew up reading Mill, Tocqueville, Tawney,et al, so I don't need a contractarian justification for the welfare state. It was presented to me as simply a Good Thing, like spinach or long walks in the country (God, I hope that Klam person doesn't come in here and call us endearing dotards or some such shit).

Re: What are you reading this summer?

It's probably an uncool discussion. But I don't care how I come across. That is why, with my sandals, I wear black dress socks pulled up almost to my knees.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I wear a sports bra under my paisley shirt. My nipples hurt when a cool breeze kicks up.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I think that you are doing the bra wrong. The cup parts go across your front.

There's your lifehack of the day

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Dollar store pregnancy tests? Toss a coin for the same accurate results.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I analyzed it. A dactylic foot followed by a trochee. Nice skipping beat, like a dainty dinosaur doing the minuet.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

If you like that, you'll love the pictures that go along with it.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Cute dinosaurs! I blame Spielberg. He has altered the very texture of childhood experience.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I'm sure real dinosaurs were adorable and not scary at all.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

They did make coffee mugs tremble, though.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I'm sure there were lots of wild coffee mugs running around back then.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

There were. They would turn cafe tables black when they arrived in herds.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Patricia Cornwell Scarpetta series. It’s a shame she went to shit after the 10th book or so.

This could be temporary.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Hi there, Dal. I used to love Cornwell's books. Haven't read any in over ten years, though.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Hey Bents. Ive read the series before but it’s been awhile. Then I’m onto something else.

This could be temporary.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I wish I had time to read grown up books… maybe I should get a new grown up book and when baby naps, I could read instead of coming here.

I can't use anything with salicylic acid while breast feeding. Somehow it affects the breast milk and is bad for the baby.
