Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

If it is PBS then the list is worthless.

The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.

1984 is great it deserves to be on top.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

I’ve read 11

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Which ones?

I read:

Tom Sawyer
Alex Cross (1 or 2 books)
Alice in Wonderland
Atlas Shrugged
Catch-22
Chrolttes Web
The Chronicles of narnia
The Clan of the Cave Bear
The Count of Monty Cristomir
Crime & Punishment
Don Quixote
Dune
Foundation (terrible with an intriguing premise)
Frankenstein
Game of Thrones
The Grapes of Wrath
Great Expectations
Gullivers Travels
Heart of Darkness
Jane Eyre
Lord of the Rings (miserable, boring read, Hobbit was tons better)
Moby Dick
The notebook
Pillars of the Earth
Pride * Prejudice
To Kill A Mockingbird
War & Peace
Watchers
Where the Red Fern Grows
Wuthering Heights

Only ones I found particularly noteworthy and not overrated were Great Expectations, Atlas Shrugged, & Pillars of the Earth. Noticeably missing: Of Mice & Men and My Brother Sam is Dead.

Charlottes Web was pretty cool too, in it's own right!

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Ten that you listed + Wheel of Time

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Who was better Jordan or Sanderson?

Enjoy.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Jordan. It did get tedious, but he knew how to write Rand and Matt better. Sanderson was alright, but you could tell it wasn’t the same. He handled a couple big moments brilliantly. I loved the ending.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

James Baldwin's "Another Country" is a great book, centered on interracial bisexual couples in 1950's America. A great novel ahead of its time and an easy read.

I wonder their criteria though? Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" and "Crime & Punishment" are surely two of the world's 20 best and they're not even on the list? Dumb Americans.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Well it's overall a great list. No really cheesy crap like "The Bridges of Madison County" or Anne Rice vampire novels.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Surprised "The Last of The Mohicans" didn't make the list.

But then again, I could be overrating Cooper's work, as Weir's "The Martian" will be classic literature before you know it, lol.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

How in hell is Clan of the Cave Bear there?!?

With lots of rewind and then play again….but enough of that young lady, does this book as a book merit a spot in the top echelon of works of literature???

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Probably not..but there are some others that i question too..Gone Girl? 50 Shades of Grey? Flowers in the Attic?

I am surprised The Road isn't there.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Love The Road and Blood Meridian.

This PBS list seems like a list of books with a cultural impact more than literary heft.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

I just read some false information from the source though. They say Baldwin's book is set in the 1970's. It was published in 1962 about the 1950's. It's an important distinction because it's pre-Civil Rights era. These idiots didn't even read the books they're reviewing.
Another Country
by James Baldwin
Set in Greenwich Village, Harlem, and France, among other locales, Another Country is a novel of passions—sexual, racial, political, artistic—that is stunning for its emotional intensity and haunting sensuality, depicting men and women, blacks and whites, stripped of their masks of gender and race by love and hatred at the most elemental and sublime. In a small set of friends, Baldwin imbues the best and worst intentions of liberal America in the early 1970s.

16. Moby Dick and Dune are my favorites from the list. I think it is pretty dodgy though.

Re: Top 100 books in America according to PBS.

Dune Series is awesome.
