I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

$1750 for a 2-bedroom apartment, with a WINDOW UNIT. It doesn't even have central air. That's literally more than a house payment.

Times have changed. When my parents got married in the 80s about bought their first 4-bedroom house, my dad was only paying $400 a month for a mortgage. A MORTGAGE! He put down a good amount, though, but point is you can't even find rent in a shitty one bedroom apartment for that cheap.

I don't like car payments and I don't like paying rent. The longest I've had a car payment was for 6 months, for a brand new one off the lot, and then in 6 months I paid it off. I'm used to having cars and not paying a monthly fee for them, so starting that would seem like I'm throwing money away. And rent sucks, too, as you're just giving someone else money to allow you to stay in a place you can't renovate. It's never yours.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Thats very true. ..God is that disgusting for rent. ..is that in an upscale area ?

Yuk yuk yuk

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Not likely. In SoCal, that's low for a two-bedroom apartment.

$1750 for a 2-bedroom apartment

People's salary went up…People are probably making over $10.10 per hour in 2018

Let's say a 2-bedroom apartment was $400 (probably less) back in 1980

People's salary back in 1980, the minimum wage was $3.10

That means, people back then were barely making it too at $3.10 per hour by renting an apartment at $400.

Trust me, people back then were finding the rent fees, outrages also…

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

1750 for a 2 bedroom would be cheap where i live

have you milked your prostate today?

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Which is?

But that's more than a $300,000 house on a 30-year-loan with 20% down. Why would someone opt to rent for a small space when they could have a larger house for the same or cheaper, and own it in the end!?

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

$300,000 would get you a shack in certain areas California. even modest homes near 1 million. buying isn't an option for many people

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

I know right? Even in the Inland Empire/San Bernadino/Riverside Counties where things were once a lot cheaper, homes are going for $300,000 and up now.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Finding a decent home for $300-$350K is nearly impossible now in this area.

We're also seeing a lot of gentrification in what used to be lower income areas as the homes were more affordable about 3-5 years ago. Now the homes in those places are over $400K.

Sounds about right. That's actually a good deal for SoCal.

"Times have changed"

No fucking kidding!

The rest of what you said is a crock of shit.

You claim to work retail, you're not wealthy.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Heh heh when I was living im downtown Chicago, my roommate and I paid $2400/mo in rent and it was absurd. We lived like kings and threw dollar bills from the L at The Blacks, covered the Loop in green as we drove by Trump Tower. It was tremendous.

Cheerio.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Average price of single family home here, $450k.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

That's actually cheap for here. The average 2 bedroom apartment/townhome rents for about $2000-2800 a month here in Orange County, CA. Average price of a single family track home is $800,000 - $1,000,000 and more.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

That's how much I paid for a ONE bedroom apartment when I lived in downtown Long Beach. And it was like 600 square feet.

My mortgage now is $2175/mo for a three bedroom townhouse that's 1,465 square feet. Plus I pay an additional $210 for the Home Owners Association. Shit ain't cheap.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Holy crap!!

I bought my house for $101,400 back in 1990.

Been paid off longgggg time ago.

Now worth about $265k

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

Must be nice to not have a monthly payment.

Re: I have this friend who lives in California and pays…

I remember paying $55/mo. for a studio back in 1968. A short beer was $.15 at the local tavern. You couldn't find prices like that in California. I was in Washington state at the time.
