Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

Love Malick. Love what I've seen of Lynch's stuff. Haven't seen enough of Polanski to really say, but I loved/liked what I saw of The Pianist (if that counts); he's obviously a director of immense skill.

Out of all of Altman's films, I've only seen Short Cuts, which I liked, but I can't very well judge his entire filmography based on that.

Haven't seen any of Ozu's films.

EDIT: I also enjoyed Gosford Park, but I didn't love it.

Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

Malick - One of my favorite directors. I love every single one of his films...except To The Wonder.

Lynch - I'm actually in the process of watching more of his films. The ones that I've managed to see over the years (Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man) are excellent. Just bought Mulholland Dr., should be watching it soon.

Polanski - Again, I need to see more of his work, but the films of his that I've seen are great. Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorite horror movies.

Have yet to see anything by Ozu or Altman, but I plan to. I've only ever heard anyone speak of these two directors with the utmost reverence.

Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

I love every single one of his films...exce b68 pt To The Wonder.

What was it about To The Wonder that you made you not enjoy it as much as Malick's other films?

Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

It's hard to say, and I should probably re-watch it because I remember very little of it at this point. I think that's part of my problem with it though, very little of it stuck with me whereas I have very clear and vivid memories of Malick's other films.

Aside from that, the parts I do remember I only do because they stuck out as being somewhat goofy and unbelievable, in the ways that the characters spoke or behaved around each other. Parts of it just rubbed me the wrong way I guess, it didn't feel as organic as Malick's other films. Again, it's hard to be specific because the memories I have of the film ar 5b4 e very faint and impressionistic by now.

Overall, I remember thinking it was ok but underwhelming as a whole, especially compared with the rest of Malick's work.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

To me, To The Wonder felt like it was made up of a bunch of deleted scenes from Tree of Life. So basically just more of the same from Malick, which is why I'm interested to know why it is hasn't gone over as well with critics or Malick fans. But maybe it's because it wasn't very distinct from his previous effort is why it wasn't as well received as Tree of Life ( people feel like they've seen it all before).

Like you said, it didn't have as many memorable images as Tree of Life or as strong a performance as Brad Pitt's.

Re: Kubrick Fans, What Are Your Thoughts On These Filmmakers?

"The purpose of this thread was to find out if there was any continuity of opinion on these filmmakers amongst fans of Stanley Kubrick not to start a flame war over Roman Polanski and Woody Allen."

There is no 'flame war'; you are being neurotic. A poster made claims about these two filmmakers which were quite startling and disturbing. It is perfectly reasonable and more to challenge such remarks, which were completely beyond the pale (I note that some troll is now attempting to have my previous post maliciously deleted by abusing the "report abuse" function, and that equally devious attempts have just been made to delete this post. No deal).

"From on now there is a moratorium on discussing Roman Polanski's personal history."

It ISN'T a 'personal' matter, but a PUBLIC matter. Trying to censor such discussion is obscene, is tantamount to a passive endorsement of such behaviour.

"If you don't want to discuss your thoughts on these directors as FILMMAKERS , then go elsewhere."

If you are here purely to censor legitimate discussion on important topics, then I strongly suggest you need to desist and go elsewhere. You started an OFF-TOPIC thread purely to parade your fave filmmakers, and now are d 5b4 emanding that those who question any aspect of these people to "go elsewhere"? You are now a troll demanding that long-standing posters here who have had numerous on-topic posts to go elsewhere?

PÍSS OFF.

The responses on this thread are truly bizarre, obscene, and deeply disturbing, and indicate a chronic ignorance of the world.

[ADDENDUM: it should now be quite obvious who is abusing IMDB by using assorted fake IDs to falsely 'report' to a blind computer programme in order to delete posts. In the context of this thread, it is very disturbing, and reveals just how screwed up these looney trolls actually are].

Yes, of course I completely agree, but aren't you actually completely wrong?

Travischaplin, Stop abusing the IMDB forums by maliciously deleting legitimate posts. Stop it NOW, because you are now coming across as someone who is not just passively and disavowedly defending the 'right' of film celebrities to sexually abuse children, but ACTIVELY doing so ...

Not me!
I do think it is kind of weird that someone keeps deleting your posts, but you're not helping the situation.
So if the person who is deleting harry's posts is reading this, stop. I stopped caring a long time ago and so should you.
Thanks for devoting so much time to this thread though.
