Film General : IT was Creepy

IT was Creepy

I liked IT. I'm desensitized to about anything so usually mainstream "Rated R" horror doesn't do it for me. But there are moments in IT that were emotionally disturbing. One was that implied sexual abuse of Beverly by her father.

Another was the bully. When he stabbed the chubby kid, I thought, "ok…he just crossed the line from being a bully who deserves to be expelled from school to a sadistic evil psychopath…ok." If he was just a bully that'd be bad enough.

Another was when they played upbeat 80s songs that didn't match the tone of the scene in which it was being played. In one scene, after a Pennywise incident, Cure music is played when the kids are in the room, like you're watching an 80s John Cusack romcom. It doesn't fit the tone at all. In the rock fighting scene, Anthrax is played. Out of context, the music makes the scene look like it's a coming-of-age story about kids rock fighting for fun, when it's much more serious than the song suggests. Music in media does a lot for how our emotions are shaped, so it takes you out of your element for a bit.

Horror movies need more than "blood and guts" nowadays. It's not the amount of violence and bloodshed that's scary. It's the emotional/mental psyche that does the job.

To see how important music is to shaping our emotions, watch the "Diff'rent Strokes" intro with different music and see how the very same intro has a very different inference.

Thanks for sharing your views. I am in a bit of quandary here as I don't know if I should watch IT or not. Some idiot revealed to me major spoilers and spoiled it for me. Should I still watch it? Can I still enjoy the movie?

Re: IT was Creepy

Sure. I have seen the 90s version and read some of King's novel, so I knew the basic plot going in, and it was still pretty good. I consider this movie to be spoil-proof. It's more visual. Spoiling what happens won't ruin a movie like this, it's more about what you see.

Re: IT was Creepy

Cool. IT is now on my watchlist .

Re: IT was Creepy

The remade IT was not scary. Not even a little bit.

Cheerio.

Re: IT was Creepy

I wouldn't call it "scary" (I don't think any commercial theatrical release can be truly scary) but there were some creepy parts that left you feeling disturbed, like a horror film should. But for a mainstream horror it was scary enough - certainly better than the Conjuring, Saw, and other horror. It dealt with topics that mainstream horror usually doesn't touch, such as child abuse and child torture.

You put emphasis on "remade" - are you suggesting the 80s version is scary? The 80s version was a joke. It was made-for-TV or one, and Pennywise was so over-the-top and silly he was more comedy than scary.

Re: IT was Creepy

It was not a good film. It was not entertaining. I regret viewing it.

I'm emphasizing the remake because I remember seeing it.

Cheerio.
