Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

Spaceballs has grown on me a lot since its initial release– I actually hated it at first. It's still a significantly lesser Brooks film, but it's been helped by the passage of time, now that it no longer looks like a way-late parody (which was part of the problem with some of latter day Brooks, his spoofs of popular films such as SW and Dracula came far after their releases, and this time lag made the comedy even lamer, somehow). All the continued fan interest in Star Wars has served Spaceballs pretty well, and it does play better now than it did when it first hit theaters.

Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

I saw Spaceballs in the theater with my younger brother.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

I have to admit that Brooks' first appearance in the film (as President of the Universe, arriving slightly scrambled on the transporter pad and exclaiming "My God, why didn't anyone ever tell me my ass was that big?!") got a huge laugh from me the first time I saw it and it still makes me chuckle whenever I happen to catch that scene again.

Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

That's classic Mel; I don't think he ever bettered himself after that film, although Young Frankenstein comes damned close.

Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

I like Blazing Saddles, but I LOVE Young Frankenstein.

Re: Mel Brooks movies are hilarious

Hey Spiderwort and Old Aussie! Really good to hear from you both; I was away for awhile, but look to be around now for some time to come.

I'd probably give Saddles the slight edge over YF, but I love them both. Of course, I'm also a fan of High Anxiety, one of Brooks' earlier films that often doesn't get the nod from a lot of his fans, so maybe my taste in matters Brooksian isn't to be the most relied upon, lol.
